Monash University
On Thursday November 28th all the Year 10s travelled to Monash University for the Schools Access Monash Year 10 Campus Experience Program. The day started with a presentation about university life including information about courses, clubs, overseas study, living on campus and various mentor experiences. Some of the take home messages here were to select subjects at school and a university course that you will enjoy doing and that there is always a pathway to where you want to go regardless of ATAR. The last component of this session was a quiz to direct them into what course they might like to take with questions such as; What was Hugh Jackman’s first job and What university courses did comedians Anh Doh, Jane Turner, The Chaser and Steve Vizard study? And did you know that primates are not the only animal with a unique set of fingerprints or that right handed people live on average 5-10 years longer than left handers. The girls enjoyed the chocolate rewards for getting questions correct. The second session was a campus tour where girls got to see the many different faculty buildings, study areas, eateries and sporting facilities. After an informative Q and A session with the girls asking many questions pertinent to university life and the school university transition it was off to spend their $10 foo voucher at the Meeting Point food court. Lunch consumed and the girls worked in teams to complete the Campus Challenge, an amazing race style quiz around the campus buildings they had toured earlier in the morning. Congratulations to the winning team, ‘Crazy Broke Asians’! Hopefully, a little insight into what can happen at university was gleaned by the students and that it might provide a motivational kick start as they move into their 2020 subjects during transition next week. Thank you to Trelene Luecke and the Homeroom teachers: Anneliese Heys, James Blanchfield, Maria Massouras, Anna Miha and Eva Kordupel for supporting the girls on this excursion at a very busy time of the year.
