A Message from Rochelle ....

Hello Altona Green Families and Friends,

We are over half way now of Term 3! The term is flying by and before we know it, it will be the last term of 2019.

As you may know, I was away for the first 6 weeks of term 3 undertaking a Principal Internship as part of the graduate certificate of principal preparation that I am currently completing. The placement was at Williamstown Primary and I had a very successful and valuable time there. I was able to work with them on a number of projects, particularly in the area of Writing instruction.  I would like to thank Lisa for encouraging me and accommodating my development opportunities and the rest of the staff for supporting me and each other in my absence, particularly David and Liz. I am very pleased to be back on ‘home turf' now and it was particularly wonderful to see all of the students this week as I walked around the school. I did get a lovely surprise on my office door, which was the Book Week display that 2SB and 5/6PC had done for me about ‘365 Penguins’. Loved it!

Speaking of Book Week, what a fun week we had. There were some amazing costumes for the parade and the classroom displays were FANTASTIC! I hope all of our students enjoyed the festivities including the incursion. Thank you to the events team for putting together a great week.

As always, there have been lots of fun learning experiences for our students in the past 2 weeks. The grade preps enjoyed a visit from some scaly and slithery creatures as part of their unit of work on ‘Living Things’. Whereas the grade 3s had a guest speaker who ran a workshop about sustainability as part of their Geography unit this term.

Altona Green is a professional learning community where all students and adults are life-long learners. As such, our staff are constantly building their professional knowledge through collaboration and learning opportunities. Recently staff spent some time learning about emotional regulation and how this can support all students, particularly when it comes to anxiety, social issues and behaviour. And just because they can't get enough...we also have some teachers attending a seminar this Saturday which is focused on Writing.

This Sunday is a very special day! We wish all of our dads, grandads, uncles and special people a very Happy Father’s Day. To celebrate, we are inviting all of our dads and other special visitors to enjoy footy day and a pie lunch with their kids. Can I also thank the Parents and Friends committee for running another successful Father’s Day Stall – we hope all the dads enjoy their thoughtful gifts!

Next Thursday is our annual disco! We hope you have your 80’s vibe ready for the event because this one is going to be disco groovy!!  Remember, we are encouraging children to bring their own water bottles this year.

Here’s to the start of Spring!

Fondly,

Rochelle
