Czech Olympiad/Olympiáda v českém jazyce

Congratulations to Elsa Sršňová, ECP’s Y2 student, who won a District Round (Prague 9) of the Czech Olympiad and will represent our school in the Regional                                        Round of  the competition.

Blahopřejeme Else Sršňové, studentce z 2. ročníku, která zvítězila v okresním kole (Praha 9) olympiády v českém jazyce a bude naši školu reprezentovat v regionálním kole soutěže.

COBIS Poetry competition/Soutěž organizace COBIS o nejlepší báseň

In January, the English department organised an internal poetry competition in the lower school. Students were invited to submit a poem following the theme 'Connections', allowing them to draw on a range of topical issues – new ways of connecting with people, community spirit, the interconnectedness of the natural world and so on. English classes voted for their class favourites to send to the judges - the English teachers. There were some very strong entries, but we were restricted to only 3 entries per category. So here are the winners from the internal competition; their poems have been entered to the COBIS 2021 Poetry Competition. The English teachers would like to thank all the students who wrote a poem. Congratulations to our winners and fingers crossed for further success in the COBIS Competition.

The Connection That Didn’t Connect

I walk into a cafe

A person who I call my friend waves at me   

I sit at her table

We start talking

Our day, our lives, our struggles                     

But although she’s sending herself to me

I receive nothing

I’ve thrown one end of my rope to her

She does the same

She catches my end

Hers doesn’t reach me

I hang a message on my rope

And watch it slide to her 

She sends one back

V lednu uspořádalo oddělení anglického jazyka v nižších ročnících interní soutěž v poezii. Studenti byli vyzváni, aby zaslali báseň na téma „Spojení“, které jim umožnilo čerpat z řady aktuálních témat - nové způsoby spojení s lidmi, duch komunity, propojenost přírodního světa, atd. Studenti jednotlivých tříd hlasovali pro nejlepší výkon, který byl předán porotě - učitelům anglického jazyka. Některé básně byly velmi vydařené, byli jsme však omezeni výběrem pouze tří děl na každou kategorii. Přinášíme vám vítěze naší interní soutěže; jejich básně byly přihlášeny do mezinárodní soutěže poezie organizace COBIS. Učitelé anglického jazyka by chtěli poděkovat všem studentům, kteří se zúčastnili. Gratulujeme našim výhercům a držíme palce pro další úspěchy v mezinárodním kole soutěže COBIS.

Open Science internship/Program Otevřená věda

I applied for an internship in Otevřená věda and received an invite to a Polymer Chemistry Internship. The topic of the internship is the "A composite of NiTi alloy reinforced by a polymer composite". 

NiTi (Nickel and Titanium) alloy is a very interesting material due to its properties - Shape Memory and Super-elasticity. I am working with the shape memory alloy. 

What are shape memory materials?

These materials have the capability to remember shapes at specific temperatures. For example, at cold temperatures, the material can be deformed, but when put into a hot environment, it goes back to the "remembered" shape. The material is widely used in dentistry, for example. 

My job specifically is to make the polymer solution, and then using spin coating, even out the solution on the NiTi alloy. After that, I will be testing its properties. 

The internship is a great opportunity to feel like a part of this big science world, with huge machinery, interesting people and never-ending sources of ideas. I am very happy I can be a part of it and I am looking forward to exploring this world further.

Přihlásila jsem se do programu Otevřená věda a dostala jsem pozvánku na stáž Polymer Chemistry." Tématem stáže je kompozit ze slitiny NiTi vyztužený polymerním kompozitem.

Slitina NiTi (nikl a titan) je velmi zajímavý materiál díky svým vlastnostem - tvarové paměti a skvělé pružnosti. Zaměřuji se na slitinu s tvarovou pamětí.

Co jsou materiály s tvarovou pamětí?

Tyto materiály mají schopnost pamatovat si tvary při konkrétních teplotách. Například při nízkých teplotách se materiál může zdeformovat, ale když se dostane do horkého prostředí, vrátí se zpět do „zapamatovaného“ tvaru. Materiál je široce používán například ve stomatologii.

Mým úkolem je konkrétně vyrobit polymerní roztok a poté pomocí odstředivého povlaku vyrovnat roztok na slitině NiTi. Poté budu testovat jeho vlastnosti.

Stáž je skvělou příležitostí cítit se jako součást tohoto velkého světa vědy, s úžasným vybavením, zajímavými lidmi a nekonečnými zdroji nápadů. Jsem velmi šťastná, že mohu být jeho součástí a těším se na další poznávání tohoto světa.

Year 1 House Maths Challenge/Matematická výzva mezi kolejemi pro 1. ročník 

Well done to all of the Year 1s who took part in the recent house Maths Challenge. It was a hard fought competition with Terra coming out as the eventual winners. They demonstrated excellent detective and problem solving skills in order to solve a murder mystery - CSI Prague has nothing on them!

Blahopřejeme všem studentům 1. ročníku, kteří se zúčastnili nedávné soutěže House Maths Challenge. Byla to náročná soutěž, v níž zvítězili studenti z koleje Terra. Účastníci předvedli vynikající detektivní schopnosti a dovednost řešit slovní úlohy a díky tomu zvládli vyřešit záhadnou vraždu - pražská kriminálka na ně nemá!

A group of Year 1 students took part in the House Maths Challenge on the 5th of February. Budding detectives Isabella and Tadeáš describe the experience below!/Skupina studentů 1. ročníku se 5. února zúčastnila soutěže House Maths Challenge. Začínající detektivové Isabella a Tadeáš popisují své zážitky níže!

Friday, 5th of January at 8:30 in the morning we joined a Google Meet to start the Maths challenge. I’ll be quite honest, I was very nervous when joining the meet. I wasn’t sure what to expect, I’ve never been to a maths challenge before. 

When I joined the meet, we started off with a couple of questions, starting off with a very simple one and progressing to harder ones as we went on. It was a simple challenge to get our brain thinking. After this, we got a murder case to solve which consisted off different types of riddles that slowly helped us find the murderer, murder weapon and the room the victims were murdered in. My favorite of these activities would have to be the murder mystery. I really liked it because it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the process of finding the murderer. I also really liked the fact that it wasn’t all about maths but also had a logical aspect to it. My overall emotions after the math challenge was that I'm really glad that I got to participate and experience something like that. I really liked it because it contained both mathematical and logical thinking. At the end of the day I really enjoyed it and I would be more than happy to participate in another Maths Challenge.

Isabella van Steeg, Year 1 Ventus

V pátek 5. ledna v 8:30hod. jsme se připojili k online schůzce na Google Meet, abychom zahájili matematickou výzvu. Budu upřímná, byla jsem velmi nervózní. Nebyla jsem si jistá, co očekávat, nikdy předtím jsem se takové soutěže neúčastnila.

Když jsem se připojila, začali jsme s několika otázkami, postupně od základních ke složitějším. Byla to jednoduchá výzva, jak přimět náš mozek myslet. Poté jsme vyřešili případ vraždy, který sestával z různých typů hádanek, které nám postupně pomohly najít vraha, vražednou zbraň a místnost, v níž byly oběti zavražděny. Tato aktivita se mi líbila nejvíc, protože byla velmi zábavná a líbil se mi proces hledání vraha. Také jsem byla ráda, že to nebylo všechno jen o matematice, ale také to mělo logický aspekt. Celkově bych hodnotila matematickou výzvu tak, že jsem opravdu ráda, že jsem se jí mohla zúčastnit a něco takového zažít. Opravdu jsem si to užila, protože úkoly obsahovaly jak matematické, tak logické prvky. Bylo to moc zábavné a velmi ráda bych se zúčastnila další výzvy.

Isabella van Steeg, 1. ročník, Ventus

On February 5th, 2021, three Year 1 students from each house were put into groups to work out some challenging math riddles and solve a murder in ECP. We started with some riddles and I have to say, they weren’t easy. They definitely challenged our logical thinking and how quickly we were able to make our way to the answer. We didn’t have much time so we had to think quickly and split work to be more effective which didn’t allow for too much teamwork, unlike the second part of the competition where we investigated a hypothetical murder that happened at our school. We were tasked with finding the person who did it (all the suspects were actually teachers!), the murder weapon, and the classroom where it happened. We got 8 clues to help us, each was encrypted using a cipher. Some were standard, for example, one was encrypted using the well known Caesar cipher, others were more unusual. For instance one of my favorites was where we had a line of letters, had to split it into four equal parts, and lastly reorganize it  by taking the first four letters every time from the four parts to get the hidden clue. This required a lot of teamwork, as we often needed an extra pair of eyes to help us gain a different perspective. The clues told us only a bit of the information, such as: The number of this room is a prime (so we knew it wasn't room 112 or room 200). Another was about the suspect, for instance: The person who did it had an even number of stripes on their sweater (we had descriptions of what the teachers were wearing so we could rule out the ones that didn’t match the clue). The murder mystery part mainly challenged our critical thinking skills and how well we could work together as a team. Overall it was very enjoyable and best of all, Terra won! :)

Tadeáš Vácha, Year 1 Terra

5. února 2021 byli tři studenti 1. ročníku z každé koleje rozděleni do skupin, v nichž vypracovávali náročné matematické hádanky a vyřešili vraždu v ECP. Začali jsme s několika hádankami a musím říct, že to nebylo snadné. Rozhodně potrápily naše logické myšlení a otestovaly rychlost, s jakou jsme dokázali přijít na řešení. Neměli jsme moc času, takže jsme museli rychle přemýšlet a rozdělit si práci tak, abychom byli efektivnější, což neumožňovalo příliš mnoho týmové práce, na rozdíl od druhé části soutěže, kde jsme vyšetřovali hypotetickou vraždu, která se stala na naší škole. Měli jsme za úkol najít osobu, která to udělala (všichni podezřelí byli naši učitelé!), vražednou zbraň a učebnu, kde se to stalo. Dostali jsme 8 záchytných bodů, které nám pomohly, a každý z nich byl zašifrovaný. Některé kódy byly standardní, například jedna nápověda byla šifrována pomocí známé Caesarovy šifry, jiné byly neobvyklejší. Například jedna z mých oblíbených šifer byla ta, při níž jsme dostali řadu písmen, museli jsme ji rozdělit na čtyři stejné části a nakonec ji přeorganizovat tak, abychom pokaždé vzali první čtyři písmena ze čtyř částí, a tím získali skrytou stopu. Vyžadovalo to hodně týmové práce, protože jsme často potřebovali další pár očí, což nám pomohlo získat jiný pohled. Nápovědy nám sdělily jen část informací, například to, že číslo dané místnosti je prvočíslo (takže jsme věděli, že to není místnost 112 nebo místnost 200). Další nápověda se týkala podezřelého: Osoba, která to udělala, měla na svetru sudý počet pruhů (měli jsme popis toho, co měli učitelé na sobě, abychom mohli vyloučit ty, kteří neodpovídali nápovědě). Zadání o záhadné vraždě prověřilo hlavně naše schopnosti kritického myšlení a to, jak dobře umíme spolupracovat v týmu. Celkově byla matematická výzva velmi zábavná a nejlepší ze všeho bylo, že moje kolej Terra zvítězila!:)
