Year 8 cricketers with coach Minnie

Year 8s dominating in Division Cricket

Last week on Tuesday the Year 8 girls and boys teams competed in the inter school cricket. Both teams did very well and came out on top. The girls only had one other school to play, Thornbury, so their game was extended to a 20 over game in a test-like format. In the first ten overs the girls made a big score of 98 and then bowled and kept Thornbury to a low score of 26. Then they batted again and made 102, bringing their score to 198. One of the Northcote girls, Indigo Rodger made 53 off 18 balls, hitting 11 fours and 1 six. Then Thornbury went out to bat again and only made 27 giving them a total of 53. This meant that Northcote won. Also, on behalf of the girls’ team we would like to thank Minnie O’Sullivan for coaching our team and looking after us.

We got to the oval and after the Captain and the vice-Captain was announced we begun are first game, we knew we needed to win all three to qualify for Regions.

In our first game we lost the toss and got sent in to bat, Duncan and Henry opened up and from then on it was great with Jay coming in at three to finish off the innings we got to a commanding score of 80. Our bowlers followed up well with Austin tacking the first wicket of the game and everyone doing their bit. We got there easily by 40 runs. A good start.

Second game we knew this was the game we needed to win.  Our batters did ok but not our best, Gus and myself got it rolling for a bit but not much and with a late surge from Freddy and Liam we scraped up to 56. A quick team talk switched us on we knew we needed to field well and we did. A run out in the first over then from there great catching all round, good bowling from Zac as well. They only managed 36 runs so it was a good 20 run win . We finished off the last game in style and had a good win and we're off to Regionals.

Thank you to our student coaches Ned Goodwin and Connor Hastings

Intermediate Division Cricket

On 19th of February our year 9&10 girls' cricket team played in the division tournament against two of our neighboring schools. We won both games. Runs and wickets were shared around, showing our strong talent throughout the whole group of girls. Some highlights from the two games were Tina, 26, Ayda 25* and I made a few. Tina, Claire, Ness and Zoe all picking up wickets as well as myself and Ayda taking a catch. We are looking forward to continuing our winning streak when we play again in regionals at the start of next month. Thank you to Pauline for looking after our team, we all very much appreciate it!

All our girls and boys cricket sides (7, 8, 9/10, Seniors) are now through to the Regionals stage of the competition. The 9/10 boys' team beat an enthusiastic but inexperienced Lalor side, bowling them out for 43 and then setting up a healthy percentage boosting score of 0/103 off our 10 overs. Highlights included Jack Oldfield’s running diving catch, Lucas Gregory taking 3 wickets, Connor Hastings and Ned Goodwin putting on 50 for the opening wicket before retiring themselves.

The team's second match was against Preston High. With NHS bowling first, Preston were in trouble early at 6/1. Jacob Atkinson and Soul Stewart both on hat-tricks in the first 2 overs. Preston HS ended up on 8/33. Northcote won comfortably and batted onto 4/70 with Nick Ryan hitting a few boundaries. With an awkward amount of teams entered (five), we missed out on playing strong rivals Thornbury HS but, progress to Regionals this week on a superior percentage.
