Central Australia Tour 2018

The Central Australia Tour was an amazing experience for all the Nossal staff and students who attended.

Students experienced the Australian Outback in many marvellous ways. This included camping in remote locations and travelling great distances by bus. Students were able to discover the changing sceneries and have a greater understanding of the remoteness of Central Australia.

There were many highlights throughout the tour, this included camping underground at Coober Pedy and learning about the local Opal mines. Students collected wood for campfires at Kings Creek Station and Uluru. Other highlights included Camel riding, scenic hikes and climbs throughout Uluru, Kings Canyon and Ormiston Gorge.

Here are some comments from the students who attended the central trip...

Central Australia was easily the greatest trip of my life. The places, people and adventures were spectacular and once in a life-time. The various locations and stories behind each different place make for an extremely interesting trip. I highly recommend this trip to other students, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and would never be regretted. - Siddhu

Visiting central Australia was one of the best experiences of my life! The landscape is so unique, and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. We went to a lot of amazing places and I would highly recommend it to everyone. - Sophie A

Going to Central Australia is probably going to be the highlight of my year and certainly a memory that I will treasure for years to come. – Sophie W

The Central Australia Trip was an unforgettable experience. The scenery, people and ‘not’ jumping across Kings Canyon are just a few things that I will remember for years to come. – Nathan D

Memorable, exciting and adventurous. These are a few words that come to my mind when asked about the trip to Central Australia. I hopefully speak for everyone when I say that this trip was unforgettable and through it we made new friendships and encountered a whole different range of experiences. From going on refreshing walks/climbs, breathtaking scenery to learning about new cultures, Central Australia was an amazing experience. Interacting with the indigenous culture helped develop a deeper understanding of what the land means to them. It was interesting to compare the different views our cultures possess. Visiting the monuments and spiritual places with the new knowledge we had, made us view Central Australia with a different perspective of how much the land means to the Indigenous people. I would highly recommend for all to sign up for this once in a lifetime trip and I can guarantee you won’t have the same experiences anywhere else. - Anusha

Minds of the Future...

How can you make Victoria more sustainable than it already is in a completely practical manner? Over the past month, my group and I tackled this problem as part of the 2018 Future Minds Hackathon.

In conjunction with finding a scalable and practical solution we also had to pitch our end result to industry professionals and answer their questions subsequently as part of our pitch (almost like shark tank). Whilst this may seem like a lot, I definitely did not regret this opportunity at all. I was able to create new and strong friendships with my group through city meetups and hour long skype calls and found a new love of biogas production (weird for a humanities kid).

Our solution was the affordable and scalable production of portable biodigesters, that would in turn decrease Victoria’s dependency on the gas grid, shorten electricity/ gas costs for consumers, and reduce Victoria’s green house gas emissions. And after hours of work and a gutsy pitch, we won (Yay!). We will be pursing this endeavour (after year 12 hopefully) with mentorship now, and it’s all very exciting. I definitely encourage this experience to anyone.
