Amgen Biotechnology Experience returns to Cowra High

Learning part of the iSTEM course

For the last three weeks, Cowra High School has participated in the Amgen Biotech Experience.  We are one of only two regional schools that are currently part of this program.  The University of Sydney, in partnership with the Amgen Foundation are working to bring biotechnology into high schools and introduce students to university quality equipment that they would otherwise not get the opportunity to work with in school.

Stage 5 Engineering have been studying the Biomedical Innovation module of the iSTEM course this term.  As part of the program, students got to learn the tools of the trade.  We spent a couple of lessons learning how to use micropipettes and the gel electrophoresis process.  Students then had the opportunity undertake the genetic modification of bacteria.  We had very tight timing to make sure we could get the modified genes into the bacteria while keeping the bacteria alive.  Most of the groups managed to successfully modify their bacteria so that is was able to produce the red fluorescent protein from a sea anemone.  These showed up as pink bacteria colonies that glowed under blue light.

The Stage 4 AES classes and some year 11 Chemistry students also participated in the introduction part of this program.  They had a fun time learning about the different pieces of equipment and how they work and having a go at gel electrophoresis.

It has been a very enjoyable three weeks running this program and the students have gained a valuable insight into what Science is like beyond high school.  We hope to continue this exciting program in the future.
