PFA, Cooking up a storm
Congratulations to our wonderful PFA who together raised in excess of $2600.00 over the weekend when they held a bbq at Bunnings, Fountain Gate.
On a sunny day, after a slow start, the dedicated team worked hard cooking sausages and feeding them to hungry tradies and DIY customers. Special acknowledgement to Larry Larkins, (PFA President) who worked hard in the lead up to the event raising funds from local traders so that all money taken on the day was profit. Larry also rallied the volunteers and became the "head spruiker" at the stall.
Future Problem Solving Championships
Over the weekend, Nossal High School played host to the 2018 Future Problem Solving Championships which was attended by over 400 students and their teachers/coaches from all over Australia. Representatives came from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. It was a busy weekend with lots of excited young people ranging from young primary school years through to senior secondary years. Thank you to the staff and students of Nossal High School who assisted in preparing for the event on Friday afternoon. Special thanks also to Mrs Engler and Mrs Sly who both gave up their time to attend as volunteer supervisors on Saturday morning.
The Future Problem Solving program assists students to develop an understanding of the problem solving process through a range of steps including brainstorming, developing a clear understanding of the problem before developing a solution. There are a range of categories for with students to participate in, some as individuals and some as small teams. Students develop their expertise throughout the school year working through two rounds of trials and tests before ultimately submitting their final solution to a nominated problem scenario, which determines the participants at the National Championships. Teams that are named as Champions at the Nationals, are invited to participate in the International Championships which are always held mid year, in the following calendar year, in the USA.
This year, we were unable to develop an effective team early in the year which meant Nossal did not participate in the championships over the weekend. However in the second semester, Future Problem Solving (FPS) has become a subject on the Year 9 Electives list and the class has made significant gains in developing their skills. It is hoped that from this class, a team(s) will form in 2019 and qualify to represent our school at the National Championships to be held in Queensland in October next year.
The Community Problem Solving Fair is always a busy place when it opens to the public and other participants to inspect the finalists projects.
