Football News

Congratulations to the numerous players who represented their leagues in the annual Interleague carnival at Pedrina Park last Sunday. This is a great opportunity for them to see how they go against the best players their age in the Western District. Students who represented Hamilton Kangaroos included Harry Austin, Tom O Sullivan and Jock Nicholls in the Under 12s. Izack Mayfield, Jock Barrie, Jack Austin, Christian te Boekhorst and Lachlan Rees in the Under 14s and Max Green, Magnus Howells, Toby Barrie, Fergus Roberts, Charley Falla Jones and Michael Crowle in the Under 16s.

Others to represent other leagues included Ollie and Jack Wortley, Charlie Whitehead, George Huf, Tobe Adamson, Fergus Peddie. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Applications for the inaugural THAC/Western Bulldogs Football Academy have now closed and the squad will be finalized and announced next week.

On Tuesday we saw some of our footballers compete in the Division 1 Yr 9/10 Bob Templeton Shield, competing against Monivae College, Baimbridge and Portland Secondary in a round robin fomat. A great start against Portland meant we ended up 19 point victors. This form continued with  quick ball movement into the forward line and tight defence which saw us amass a ten goal victory against Baimbridge. The final game against our traditional rival Monivae was always going to be a tough game and it proved this way with both teams playing some great football but our inaccurate kicking at goal cost us as we went down by 8 points. However, with 3 schools locked on two wins for the day it came down to percentage and we managed to take out the Division 1 Yr 9/10 Bob Templeton Shield for the first time in over 20 years at least! Major goal kickers on the day were: Tyler Hately with 6, Max Green and Jason Hawker 2 each.

Consistently dominant players on the day included: Max Green (Medal), Magnus Howells, Ollie Wortley, Tyler Hately, Jason Hawker, Charley Falla-Jones and Fletcher Bright.

Last week, we took a team of 21 young players to match up against the bigger and strong footballing schools around the district in the annual First 18s competition. We came up against Monivae College, Baimbridge and Portland Secondary in a round robin format. The boys battled hard all day only to come up short against some good opposition. Two close losses early in the day were followed with a comprehensive loss to Monivae. Better players throughout the day consisted of Nicholas Vallance(Medal), Riley Alexander, Harry Robertson, Dougal Sweeney, Magnus Howells.

GD Cross Country Report

On Monday the 20th we sent away the GD Cross Country team to Portland.  Thankfully the weather held off for a great day of racing. Well done to everyone who competed. We had many outstanding efforts with many runners placing in the top three and some winning their age groups. Sam Crawford finished first in the 16 year old boys’, Niamh Sutherland was the Open Girls’ Champion and Sam O’Shannessy was the Open Boys’ Champion. Well done to these students. As well as having many individual successes, the College also came away with the Girls’ Aggregate and Overall Aggregate, closely coming second in the Boys’ Aggregate. The next stage will be held in Bundoora for the ICCES Cross Country competition next term.  Good luck to all runners going on to this stage.

Hannah Russell and Sam O'Shannessy (Cross Country Captains)

Girls' Hockey Report

The A Grade Women were certainly challenged in their game on Monday night against Coleraine Black. The game was evenly poised 1-0 in College’s favour at half time. Coleraine created their chances; credit to our star goalie Emily McNaughton who saved a number of Coleraine shots on goal. College finally opened up the Coleraine backline with Phoebe and Hannah Russell putting the game beyond doubt. College was too strong in the end defeating Coleraine 4-1.

Better players – Ruby Cush, Emily McNaughton, Chloe Andersen and Nikita Cavill

Blades and Scorchers faced off on Monday night in a very even contest. Neither side was able to score and a draw was probably a fitting result. What a delight it has been to see the improvement in both these sides in only 4 weeks. Well done to Charles Cain, Mrs Nichols and Chloe Russell for their work with both teams.

Better Players: Ashleigh McNaugton, Jordy Brown, Emily Crawford, Olivia Read and Alyssa Hocking.

Boys' and Under 16 Hockey

There were no junior fixtures last weekend due to the Junior Country Championships in Melbourne and well done to all College students who represented the Association in Melbourne at Under 13 or Under 15 levels.

The Open team played on Tuesday night as a result of the Association keeping the weekend clear to facilitate support for teams in Melbourne over the weekend.  We met Coleraine Rams in our first evening game of the year and, despite periods of dominance and many shots at goal, we were defeated 2-4.  Captain

Reagan Simons scored our first goal and Jock Adamson our second – this was Jock’s first senior goal.  We hope it is the first of many!  Whilst we had some good periods of control, we struggled to maintain our run and spread, too often limiting our play to the centre of the field where we were often bustled off the ball.  Hopefully, we have learnt that our strength lies in using the whole field and running together.

We will find out this weekend!
