Year Three and Year Five Naplan
Well done to our Year Three and Year Five students who completed NAPLAN 2019 on Friday, 17th May. The four days of online testing went smoothly, with no major issues. Classroom teachers Mrs Bernadette Milich and Mr Graham Lewis prepared their students well for the Writing, Reading, Convention of Language and Numeracy tests. Mr Ian Cook provided fabulous I.T. support throughout the testing window. Results will be available to parents in Term Three.
Assembly Theme - 'Respect'
On Monday, our Assembly theme was ‘Respect’. We looked at the definition of ‘Respect’ and found examples in our daily school lives where we demonstrate ‘Respect’ for individuals, our school, our playground and our uniforms. This week, students without blazers and not in the correct school/P.E. uniform will have stickers placed in Record Books. All students are expected to wear their blazer to and from school. Our uniform is a point of difference from other schools, and I ask parents to support us in keeping the uniform standard consistently high.
Laidlaw House Service
Parents and friends are invited to join us for the Laidlaw House Service to be held on Wednesday 29th May 10.15am at the Uniting Church. The theme for this service will be Gratitude.
Enrichment Programmes
This week, Mrs Anna Robertson commenced Maths Olympiad and Math Games competitions with selected Year 5 and Year 6 students.
The Maths Olympiad has been offered in primary schools since 1987. The Olympiads have gained in popularity over the years and have developed a reputation for excellence in mathematical education, resulting in thousands of schools from across Australia and New Zealand entering teams into the competition every year.
The Maths Games competition provides an opportunity for students in Years 5 to learn valuable problem solving skills and exposes them to the application of mathematical problem solving strategies and techniques.
Tournament of Minds
This week, our Year 5 and Year 6 students were introduced to Tournament of Minds. This is a problem solving programme for teams of students. The aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.
Junior School students have been asked to return an ‘Expression of Interest’ form in order for us to ascertain how many teams we will enter in the 2019 competition, which will be held in Geelong on Sunday, 25th August.
Country Week Hockey
On Saturday and Sunday, the following students travelled to Melbourne to compete in the 2019 Country Week Hockey Championships; Jake Butcher, Jack Jarvis, Ciaran Nelson, Ben Walker, Harry Brown, Tom Templeton, Harry Mercer, Rupert Merrin, Charlie Jarvis, Izzi Adamson, Chloe Headlam, Skye Headlam, Ava Mould, Zoe Addinsall, Olivia Rees, Olivia Reed, Sophie Merrin, Sacha Laidlaw and Chloe Laidlaw.
The Junior School students competed in the under 13 competition, representing Glenelg Region. Throughout the weekend, the teams played against opposition from much larger associations, including Albury, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton. They acquitted themselves very well, with the Girls finishing 6th and the Boys 10th. A measure of success should not be the number of wins or goals scored, but in the words of legendary basketball coach John Wooden, “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
