Language News

Sayonara, Ayame!

This month we sadly say farewell to our Japanese language assistant Ayame Shinozuka. Ayame has spent the past year at Dromana College and has been an invaluable support to the Japanese staff and students during her time here.

We will miss Ayame around the Language Centre but would like to wish her all the very best with her future studies in Japan.

On behalf of the students at Dromana College we would like to say thank you to Ayame. Ayame has been very helpful in the Japanese classroom and it was a great experience to communicate with a native speaker. We have not only improved our language skills but also learned a lot about Japanese culture. We will all miss you so much.

Food Immersion 2018

On Monday 26th and 27th March, the Year 8 Languages students hosted Food Immersion Nights to display their cultural understanding and knowledge of cuisine and etiquette in Indonesia and Japan. These nights also provided students with an opportunity to practise their second language in front of their parents. Students prepared three-course meals for  booked out “restaurants” of 180 parents each night with great success – many parents even staying behind to ask for recipes!  We would like to extend our thanks to the Food Technology staff, but especially Jo Tyrrell for all of her support and hard work.

Lights, Camera, Action!

This term the Languages team were one of eight schools filmed for the Department of Education and Training Digital Stories Project. This mini-film highlights the quality Languages programs offered not only at Dromana College, but also to a number of primary schools through Polycom by our staff.

Our Digital Story can be viewed on the Department of Education’s FUSE website and will be used as an example to support primary schools strengthen the quality of their own Languages Programs.

Around the Classroom

Students in Japanese and Indonesian have been engaging with Numeracy in the Languages classroom this term and graphing some of their favourite things.
