The Careers Hub

Explore Careers Fair 2018

Last Friday I had the opportunity to visit the Explore Careers Fair  which was held at the RACV City Club. There were over 100 school representatives in attendance. This was a great chance for me to speak with a large selection of Australia's leading organisations from a broad variety of industries. The event is Australia’s premier Careers & Education program for Secondary School Career Advisors, helping students between Years 9-12 make better and more educated decisions about their future career and education options. For information about the type of businesses that attended, visit the Explore Careers website here.

Employers discussed at length the types of employability skills they look for, the types of subjects to consider studying and the range of possible pathways to gain entry to their industry. Many businesses do offer traineeships, paid placements and intern positions for students in different phases of their study so it is worth researching some of the companies you may be considering future employment with.

If you would like to look through some of the brochures and tip booklets I collected please drop by the Careers office.

Three mindsets at EY

EY (Ernst and Young)  was one of the companies in attendance at the Explore Careers Fair. I would like to share with you their interesting article about how they define the three mindsets that they want all their people to have in order to proactively embrace change:

  • Innovation
  • Global
  • Analytics

"The analytics  mindset is all about the ability to extract, transform and load relevant data as well as being able to apply appropriate data analytics techniques, and then being able to interpret and share the results with stakeholders. Having an analytics mindset as well as the ability to provide better insights and efficiencies are essential now and will be even more so in the future."

Here is their advice on how to develop an analytics mindset:

  • Learn about the concepts of data analytics and big data
  • Look for new ways to interpret and analyse data — explore how any insights that you gather from data might improve a process or a project
  • Practise sharing data insights with your peers, classmates or teachers. Being able to clearly articulate analytical results is equally as important as obtaining them.

EY also offers a variety of cadet and graduate programs to combine work with your university study.
