HKHS Athletics Carnival 2019

On Wednesday 29 May, the 49th Henry Kendall High School Athletics Carnival was held at Mingara Regional Athletics Centre.

It was a cold start to the morning, but with our lightning fast race walkers taking to the track things warmed up very quickly. We had record numbers participating in the race walk (our first track event) which set the trend for the remainder of the day, which saw large fields of competitors in all events.

The long jump pit saw plenty of action, firstly with Triple Jump and then with large groups of students launching themselves into the air during their long jump competitions. The level of competition was very high and the covers needed to be pulled back even further to ensure the athletes landed in the pit.  A number of records were challenged and broken on the day as well as many students jumping their personal best.

Athletes competing in the throwing events made light work of the strong winds. Discus and shots were flying through the air. The competitions were close and centimetres made the difference between gold, silver and bronze.

On the High Jump mats, there were as many techniques as there were competitors. The students were jumping some incredible heights, requiring some of the shorter staff members to get assistance to raise the bar high enough.

The athletes competing in the track events made the most of the new pristine blue surface. Records were starting to fall from the first events to the last. Our judges were put to the test with some very close finishes which from a distance, looked like a rainbow of red, blue, yellow and green sprinting across the line.

As is tradition, the day concluded with the relay events, showcasing the best runners from each house. Not only do athletes need to be fast, but also work well as a team to ensure the baton changes are smooth and efficient. The students produced some spectacular racing with some very close finishes.

We hope that all students challenged and enjoyed themselves on the day and wish all of the students who make the Zone Athletics Team the best of luck for their upcoming competitions.
