NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Each year, NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Thank you to all who got involved to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2020, with the theme “Always Was, Always Will Be.”

Particular thanks goes to students Sam Conell, Courtney Brkin, Emily Martin, Lachlan Capena, Maddi McKay, Brodie Martin, Aaden Hardman, Vivone Street and all of the SRC.

A multitude of staff invested their time and efforts to ensure the NAIDOC celebrations catered to a range of interests with a variety of engaging activities on offer. Thank you to Emma S, Eloise, Donna, Kellie, Annelise, Sacha, Jo, Usha, Dave, Mel P, Calysta, Sophie, Kaitlyn, Shae, Nem, Sam, TJ, Michael, Liz, Dan N, Tracey, Julie, Thelma, Candy, Jenny Amadeo, Andrew, Lisa S, Nic F, Nic D, Steph, Mel D, Jenny G and Gary.

We celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples this week with the Acknowledgement of Country, Remembrance Day indigenous tribute, indigenous music over PA system and lunchtime activities including:

  • Art: NAIDOC Paintings.
  • Food: Riberry Ice-Cream, Bush Spice Damper, Lemon Myrtle & Macadamia Nut Muffins, BBQ Roo Skewers and Wattleseed Mug Puddings.
  • Screenings: Bran Nue Day, Top End Wedding, Freeman and The Final Quarter.
  • Sport: Wulijini (an indigenous game similar to volleyball).
  • Textiles: Scrunchies, Masks and Ezi Ears.

The week was kicked off with our community dressing in black, yellow & red for a free-dress day. The funds raised was combined with Book Week’s fundraiser and donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Furthermore, many of the activities in Book Week focused on indigenous stories and authors.

We look forward to NAIDOC Week in 2021 as our McClelland community continues to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
