A Year in Review - Year 9

2020 has been the year in which the Year 9 grade has taken big steps as future leaders of the school.  We (Mr Collins and Mr Howard) are tremendously proud of the achievements Year 9 has made in a year that has featured so many highs and lows.

Term One saw the school transition to At-Home learning, with Year 9 taking to their devices to undertake their learning.  The students successfully adapted to their learning, with Zoom lessons quickly becoming the new norm.  One of the greatest successes of this period was the team spirit of the grade, as they supported one another in this time of uncertainty.  Another success was the At-Home Challenges that had students film themselves performing various challenges, i.e. paper toss.

We were fortunate to see the school gates opened in Term 2, allowing Year 9 to dust off their school uniforms.  It was a special sight to see so many friends greeting each other (in a social distancing manner) after a number of weeks.  It was fantastic to see so many students welcomed back by their teachers, ready to start their learning on-site after such a challenging period.

Terms 3 & 4 saw Year 9 rise to the challenge of beginning their transition as future leaders of the school.  A number of programs were run to allow students to develop further as responsible, respectful and successful leaders.

The RAGE and Links to Learning Program was valued by a number of selected students, who got to know each other and themselves in an open and reflective space.

A large number of students nominated themselves for Peer Mentoring, eager to help the Year 7 cohort of 2021 as they adjust to high school life.  These students showed tremendous leadership, empathy, and wisdom as they undertook a two day training program to develop themselves as Peer Mentors for 2021.

Cooking challenges, running businesses, timber creations and sports coaching were all showcased throughout this period, breaking down the walls of the traditional classroom.  It was a privilege to witness so many students showcasing their talents in such a dynamic environment.  Elective night in 2021 will sure be interesting for our students looking to pursue their passion!

Rewards Day saw Year 9 head to the Cables Aqua & Water Park for their well-earned rewards day.  We were proud to see the grade take on all the action-packed activities.  After Jamberoo and Cables Wake Park, the search is on for our next exciting event!

Finally, Year 9 embraced the colour green as they took the lead on celebrating the FOCUS values of the school.  Teaming up with Miss Adams, the Year 9 grade took to fundraising for the school with green lollies and more.  It was such a great experience to see students trying to compete for the most amount of money raised.

What an absolute rollercoaster of a year!  We are so proud of all the Year 9 achievements as the year draws to a close.  We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season and we can’t wait to see you all in 2021!
