Library

Important Information

When are we open?

Monday to Thursday 8.00am to 5.00pm

Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm

We are also open in the second week of holidays from 8.00am to 4.00pm at the end of Term 1 and Term 2. However, we are open from 8.00am to 4.00pm during the FIRST week of the Term 3 break just prior to the VCE trial exams.

How many books may I borrow?

Students can borrow up to 10 books at a time. You may be able to negotiate borrowing more books over the holidays (including over the Christmas break). Just ask us.

How long may I have the books?

The normal loan time is four weeks.  This may be longer if you borrow over the holiday breaks.

What about the wonderful VCE books in the VCE Study Room?

You may borrow these at the end of the day as long as you return them before first period on the next school day. They must be available when needed by other students during study periods each day.

Can I reserve a book?

Yes.  Ask one of your friendly Librarians to do it for you.

Can I request a book to be purchased?

Yes. We nearly always purchase books that you request.  Either come and tell a staff member in person or write it on the suggestion sheets stuck on the end of the Fiction shelves. Make sure you leave your name there, too, so that we can get the book to you when it comes in.

New Staff

The new Library Technician at Kilbreda College is Dianne Saugy and she is pleased to see so much enthusiasm for books and reading in the first weeks of school. She has come to the College after working most recently at De La Salle in Malvern.  Her past experience in school libraries is extensive and we welcome her to our new Library team.

Our new Teacher Librarian is Yvonne Langford. Yvonne has worked as a Teacher Librarian for over 20 Years, most recently as Head of Library at Xavier College, Kostka Hall. To quote her:

"I have always had a passion for literature, particularly picture books and young adult literature. I love sharing this passion with young people, knowing that for every book they read, they have grown and changed for the better. It is so rewarding hearing students talk about books they have read and being excited about their next adventure.

I was educated at Kilmaire College, a Brigidine school in Melbourne, which I loved, so when the opportunity came up to work at Kilbreda , I jumped at the chance. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming since the moment I arrived. I feel like I have come home!"

Displays

Wonder

Our College’s engagement with the theme of 'Wonder' is well expressed in this sentence from Kildare Ministries: 'In line with the Living Justice Peace Charter is the themeLearning with Wonder which reminds us of the beauty, complexity and fragility of creation.  It challenges us to search for meaning, truth and peace'. The Library is supporting this theme with several displays – and of course, with books!

Permanent display

When you next come through the Library, have a look at the two cabinets filled with published works from past pupils and teachers, past and present. In the former group we note Clare Rhoden, Judith Kinnear and Vikki Petraitis; while in the latter group are current teaching staff Karen McMullen, Louise Stevens, Brian Ellett, Jacinta Devlin and Damian Smith, along with a past teacher, Allan Drummond.  These cabinets are a wonderful showcase of the calibre of our staff and indeed of the students they have taught!

COVID era books due back

There are many books which were borrowed before the various lockdowns in 2020 and these are all due back. Library staff will print overdue notices from Tuesday 16 February, but we would appreciate it if students had a look around their rooms for anything which looks like it could be a library book!
