ARTS MATTERS

LET'S GET PRACTICAL!

Upon return from remote learning, students from Year 7 Art were energised and eager to get back into hands-on, practical art making. During Term Four, students across the cohort have completed a range of visually stunning works within the disciplines of painting and printmaking.

In Year 7 painting, students worked on landscapes, inspired by three guiding artists, David Hockney, Jeffrey Smart and Howard Arkley. British artist David Hockney is renowned for his vibrant, organic rural landscapes and vivid, saturated colour palette. Students learned and applied techniques favoured by Hockney, including glazing, sgrafito and stippling. Australian artists Smart and Arkley were both internationally recognised for their interpretation of the built environment. Students were inspired by Smart’s realism and attention to detail and enjoyed the playful, patterned and pop-esque suburban homes depicted by Arkley. All students gained an appreciation of the importance of composition, underpainting, layering and the purposes of different brush types and techniques.

In Year 7 printmaking, students were required to design and create a lino print based on Australian native animals. As a guiding inspiration for their own designs, they explored the irreverent and humorous work of Australian artists Bruce Goold and Mulga; and the gentle, respectful animal paintings of Indigenous artist Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown. Students were taught how to transfer their design to lino, how to carve lino safely using the correct techniques and were encouraged to place an emphasis on line and texture in their design. Grappling with the concept of negative space, many found it tricky to realise that the areas they were carving were the areas that would end up being ‘white’ or in relief. Students had a ball in the printing process, loving the immediacy of manual printing and seeing all their hard work pay off with some spectacular prints. They relished the opportunity to hand colour their prints, experimenting with watercolour painting and the Chine Colle technique.

The results of both projects were phenomenal and we are very proud of the inspired paintings and prints our Year 7 Art students have made, as well as being completely in awe of their incredible resilience and commitment to improving their art-making skills.

The Visual Arts teachers are incredibly proud to announce that Rishab Kiran (2020 Year 12 student) and Ilia Parakhin (Year 12) have both been chosen to have their Visual Communication Design work exhibited in this year's Top Designs exhibition.

Top Designs is an annual exhibition celebrating outstanding work in creative subjects across the state. A total of 370 submissions were received, of which only seventeen Visual Communication Design students were selected for exhibition.

Rishab designed a logo and merchandise for a fictional ESports brand, as well as a headphone design for competing players to use. Ilia constructed a scaled Architectural Model and promotional material for the building.

Congratulations Rishab and Ilia!
