Year 2News

Year 2

The Year 2 students have been setting up their routines for writing, reading, laptop use and how to behave in our classroom. The students have started the process of letter writing and be writing  their first letter to their pen pals at Beaumaris Primary School.

After a great eSmart week, students have learnt not to share personal information online and to always have a trusted adult around when they are online. We will begin use of laptops once all the students have returned their eSmart agreement.

Year 2 will soon begin the Unit of Inquiry, 'How We Express Ourselves' with our 'Inside Out' Wellbeing Unit. Students will explore how to manage their emotions

In Maths the Year 2 students have started to explore how the position of numbers affects their value  (place value). We have completed many hands-on activities, an example of this - the children were given a number and they had to line up in sequential order. We also identified odd and even numbers, digits that added up to a certain value and numbers in the stated "tens".

Students have played a card game in pairs where the children had to turn over three cards and write down all the numbers they could make.  We also explored the best strategy to count a large number of icypole sticks quickly and accurately. Some children counted by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's or 30's. Others sorted the icypole sticks into colours but discovered they had trouble adding up the total and this wasn't a good strategy to use.

We are so proud of how the Year 2 students have settled in to our classroom routines and displaying wonderful independence.
