Phillip Gwynne author visit Wednesday 11th Sept
Award winning author Phillip Gwynne will visit our College next Wednesday, 11th September. Phillip’s stories are full of humour and insight, with his young adult books such as Deadly, Unna? (which has been on the St. Joseph’s College English booklist), coming to terms with contemporary social issues.
During his visit to St. Joseph’s Phillip will make two presentations – one to all Year 7 and 8 students, and one to all Year 9 students – in the Oak Centre. The presentations will be followed by an author workshop for 20 students from each year level who have a keen interest in reading and writing. A group of10 students who have shown an outstanding commitment to their studies, especially in writing, and who have shown a love of literature and learning, will also be announced and attend lunch with the author.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated, and to those who met the Challenge and read 15 or more books. Well done! Each of the students who read 15 books or more have been recognised at our School or House Assemblies and presented with awards for their achievement: Harrison Oliver, Thomas Hawkett, Phillipa Bush, Bailey Marsh, Lily Marriott, Ruby Brentnall, Ashton Walker, Riley Hutton, Clayton Lindberg, Shani Bain and Lachlan Gould.
Thank you to Mrs Bush for coordinating the PRC at St. Joseph’s for the first time.
Please pledge to read for one hour on Thursday 19th Sept
At St. Joseph’s we are aiming for a total of 100 Pledges for Australian Reading Hour from our students, staff, families and friends by 19 September. To pledge, email cgibson@sje.vic.edu.au and your name or your family’s name will be added to a pledge card for display on a Pledge Board in the College. Then all you need to do is read a book of your choice, out loud, to your children, or on your own, for just one hour on Thursday 19 September. This is a national day when everyone is encouraged to read. Such a simple way to rediscover the joy and benefits of reading.
Book Week
Book Week was a joy at St. Joseph’s. The Library and College was humming with activities and participation, from Book Bingo to Reading Treasures to the Family Reading Challenge. The week culminated in the Book Stack Relay on the College basketball courts with House teams having a lot of fun and competing for placings.
Book Week is all about students, families, staff and friends rediscovering the joy and benefits of reading. We look forward to an even bigger Book Week in 2020.
