Pastoral Care and Wellbeing

RU OK DAY
The National RU OK Day is Thursday 12th September 2019. It was founded in 2009 by Gavin Larkin and its mission is to inspire and empower everyone to connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling. During the week there will be a range of activities, tasks and information to support conversation, awareness and relationships as we work to improve and enhance the wellbeing of everyone.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
You don’t have to be an expert to ask somebody “Are you OK?”
It’s something that we can all do to make a difference.
By inspiring people to take the time to ask "Are you OK?" and listen, we can help people struggling with life feel connected and supported.
It all comes down to regular, face-to-face, meaningful conversations about life. And asking “Are you OK?” is a great place to start.

Our Focus Procedure
We have been focusing on ‘Entering the Classroom’ and what this should look like to support our students and learning environment. Students have been explicitly taught the steps of this procedure. The procedure is visible on the door for each classroom and learning area.
Fitwell
Our new student wellbeing program has started and is well received. Thanks to Mr Francis Lias and Mr David Whyte for facilitating the program every Monday and Wednesday morning.
During Term 111 as part of St. Joseph’s Wellbeing Program students will be offered the opportunity to participate in a new program called FitWell. The purpose of this program is to develop students' values, foster resilience and build self-confidence. Students will develop and utilise communication and teamwork skills through participation in a varied range of group work activities. Students will have the opportunity to take part in six Gym Sessions. These will be used to develop group health and fitness as part of a planned life skills program. The second part of the program at Murray Life Adventures will see students utilise existing skills whilst undertaking a series of challenges by choice.
Physical Mind Co (PMC), Name change to Thrive Wellness and Consulting
We are now into our second year of partnership with PMC, now known as Thrive. Over the past twelve months students have been able to access psychologist services from PMC staff. This relationship has strengthened supports provided by the school’s Wellbeing Team.
Hands on Learning
This joint program is now running at St. Josephs in partnership with Hands On Learning Australia for students from St. Joseph’s and Echuca Specialist School. Mr David Chapman is facilitating the program with Artisan Teacher Mr Jamie Harding. In the short term it is hoped the students will soon commence building a Wood Fired Pizza oven for use by the St. Joseph’s Community.
SCHOOL TV
A reminder that you have access to School TV, which is a fantastic resource with a range of materials for parents to support their students. This can be accessed via PAM, St. Joseph’s Website, or the link: https://sje.vic.schooltv.me/
SPECIAL REPORT: The Hunting - TV Series
"The Hunting" is a drama series following the lives of four young Australians as they explore the complexities of relationships, identity and sexuality via technology. The series follows the lead-up, revelation and aftermath of an inappropriate teen photo scandal and the impact it has on the students, teachers and families involved.
Research shows that young people are increasingly exploring their sexuality online. A report from La Trobe University states that 26percent of teens have sent a nude or sexual image, or video, of themselves to someone else.
The aim of this series is to promote discussion and awareness in an attempt to minimise harm. Experts suggest that conversations about online safety should start in the home and should occur as soon as a parent hands over a mobile device to a child. This should be then constantly reinforced throughout their educational journey.
In this Special Report, parents and caregivers will be encouraged to have conversations with their children about the issues of online safety and the potential harm of image sharing and cyberbullying. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
