ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS' REPORT

REPORT
EXAMS
Mid-year examinations are fast approaching, with all students in Years 9 - 11 finalising assessments and revising. Thorough revision and effort in exams in these middle years lays a strong foundation for success in Year 12. Students should set high expectations for their own achievement and seek advice and support from their teachers. We wish all students the best of luck in their exams.
At home students can be supported by implementing the following recommendations:
- Providing a quiet study space at home free from distractions;
- Encouraging your son or daughter to eat well and get plenty of sleep;
- Encouraging students to limit social engagements around this time, including their use of internet social networking sites such as Facebook. Students should focus on their studies, without distraction from Instagram, sending SMS to friends, etc.
NAPLAN TESTING
NAPLAN testing will be undertaken by students in Years 7 and 9 at the College next week. Punctuality, organisation and a mature approach to the NAPLAN tests are critical; please refer to the previous edition of McKinnon News for more detailed information about NAPLAN. Results will be sent home to students late in Term 3.
SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING
Incidents have arisen recently where individuals have used social networking sites such as Instagram to post offensive and harmful material to students.
Please discuss with your child their use of such social networks, including the risks associated with creating online 'friendships' with individuals they don't know in person. In addition, creating an online presence/profile that permits anonymous postings is extremely risky and should be strongly discouraged. Whilst we recognise that online communication and interaction is a big part of students' lives, we want to ensure they are also safe and responsible users of such technology. Online harassment via social networks can not only cause great damage to students' self-esteem, it is unlawful.
McKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE BUILDING FUND
In recent years many families and ex-students have made generous donations to our tax-deductible Building Fund. The College plans to use such funds to support projects such as Stage 2 of our redevelopment of the College’s facilities and our current library refurbishment and extension. Stage 2 will include the construction of new Science laboratories, general purpose classrooms, toilets and music studios - replacing many facilities built in the early 1950s.
Further information about our building fund and the proposed Stage 2 redevelopment can be found on our website at http://www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au/mckinnon-secondary-college-building-fund/. On behalf of the staff and students of McKinnon, we sincerely thank all those who have contributed to our Building Fund.
