What's happening in the 5/6 classrooms

How did term 4 fly by so quickly? We are already in week 6 can you believe it?

The senior students have been learning about how different texts types have different purposes such as a narrative or poetry is written to entertain, make people think or pass on a message; an information text is written to inform the reader; while a persuasive text is designed to persuade the reader. The students have been learning to write descriptive poems for five weeks and have explored different forms of figurative language including similes and metaphors, personification and hyperboles to name a few. Families will be able to read and listen to some of the student's poems being read in Week 10 during Prize Giving, as well as on SeeSaw.

Year 5’s have now turned their attention to writing leadership speeches which will be presented in week 9. Gee that’s only three weeks away! Mr Twomey came in to tell the children what qualities and behaviour he expects in a school leader. Year 6 students have been focusing on Graduation and reflecting and writing about their time spent at Holy Family.

In Religious Education, we have been continuing our unit with the big question: “ How did Mary prepare for Change?.” The students examined the signs, symbols and rituals associated with Advent, including the Advent wreath. We have also started learning about and writing prayers that use the four parts: we gather, we listen, we respond and we go forth with the theme of the Holy Family. The students will be invited to make the connection that Mary prepared for change by praying deeply and accepting with an open heart what the Lord had requested of her. Mary said “Yes!” to God’s request of carrying his only son.

In Mathematics the students explored capacity and volume and for the past two weeks, have been learning about chance and the language associated with this topic. This includes the likelihood or probability of an event taking place. Students have been using what they have learnt through the topic of 'number,' such as decimals, common fractions, percentages and the concept of equivalence to express probability.
