Year 12 Data Analytics

2020 heralded the return of Year 12 Applied Computing with a fantastic group of students, passionate about ICT. Many of these students were our 'Tech Angels' in Year 7, active members of our 'Techbots Club' in Years 7 to 10 and we are so proud of their achievements.

They learnt all about collecting, storing, manipulating, analysing, presenting and securing data. Valuable skills for the 21st century! Some of their finished infographics were very professional indeed. While 2020 may not have been the final year they were expecting, it has allowed them to develop their independent working skills and we wish them all well in their future endeavours. We hope they continue to pave the way for young women in STEM!

And now some primary data from our wonderful Data Analytics Class of 2020!

I chose Data Analytics as I felt it was the only subject that would give us 'future ready' skills that are critical for the ever-changing work force. It is a subject that also covers so much from programming (solving problems), to designing (creativity), and cyber security (just kind of cool). The things I liked best about Data Analytics include the wide variety of topics, the amazing teacher, the mix between practical work and theory, and also seeing the end product at the finish of a SAT.

Madison Baker

Year 12

I chose this subject as it is a great way to learn about the way of the future. I loved the practical way of learning that it was through the creation of our own solutions.

Catherine Russell

Year 12

I chose this subject because I wanted to go into something involving technology in both university and in my career. I figured that this subject would give me a head start on learning about programming and cyber security, and it didn’t disappoint. I’ve even developed a soft spot for data manipulation!

I absolutely loved the programming and cyber security areas of study! While it was definitely frustrating at times, coding was something I was very interested in and the feeling of getting a piece of code to work was great! I’ve also been into cyber security pretty recently, so learning about the hardware, software and legal obligations behind it was an instant favourite.

Angelique Palatino

Year 12

I chose to do Data Analytics because the content is interesting and relevant for the current time and because I could learn skills which will be extremely useful for future work.

I have loved learning about technology which is around us and being able improve my design and problem-solving skills.

Skye Zhu-Maguire

Year 12

I just feel that Computing and Data Analytics teaches skills that will be useful for a wide range of future employment. One thing I really enjoyed was the work surrounding data gathering and using the tools in Access and Excel to clean and manipulate the data.

Last year my favourite thing was coding programs on Python and I also really enjoyed the classroom banter.

Zoe McFayden

Year 12

This year has been a roller coaster for me, there were good times as well as bad times. Data Computing was, honestly, not easy but it was one of the subjects where I had the most fun. I chose this subject in Year 11 as I had the dream of becoming a Game Developer. I felt that Computing was going to be the stepping stone for the realisation of my dream.

I had a great time even as I struggled to make a decent looking website and making infographics using the limited amount of pictures that were not copyrighted (which again, wasn’t much haha). I am very grateful for Ms Donoghue who has stuck by us Computing students throughout Year 11 and Year 12. She let us play games and gave out Japanese stickers to people who had won.

I highly recommend the future VCE students to take on Computing as it can prepare them for the upcoming years of adulthood.

Lin Teo

Year 12

I chose this subject because I wanted to learn more about how we can use technology as I know it is an important field that is continuously developing. I also love being creative and designing which is becoming more digital based and I wanted to improve my skills. The best thing I have loved about this subject is how close we have become, this group of girls so supportive and are always willing to help each other out, we are all such good friends now as well as being able to develop my skills with technology which has helped me a lot in other classes.

Kathleen Pope

Year 12

I chose VCE Data Analytics because I love exploring, designing and creating on a computer. I have completed technology as a subject from Year 7 all the way through Year 12 and by far Year 12 computing has been the best as I have really developed and explore many information systems that have contributed to my love of technology. The best thing that I learned throughout this year of computing was the development and production of a database as it can be a handy tool to know and also it made it easy to find trends and perform searches through large amounts of data.

Stephanie Henderson

Year 12

I chose Data Analytics because I wanted to try something different and get out of my comfort zone. We have learned so much that applies to everyday life. I have been able to apply my knowledge from this subject to all my other subjects at school, and I know that having knowledge about computers and software will benefit me out in the “real world” too.

Alaska O'Leary

Year 12

I took Data Analytics this year because I have a strong interest in women in STEM and learning more about emerging technology. My favourite thing about this year was learning about cyber security.
