Principal's message

Dear MGSC School Community

This week has been a jam-packed week with our Unit 3 & 4 exams kicking off with the English exam on Tuesday. I joined the VCE team, Carol Duggan, Karen Garton and the English teachers to give their support to the Year 12 students whilst they were waiting to enter gym which was set up for their exam. I noticed that the students were calm and seemed prepared for their exams. It is a huge undertaking for our Year 12 students and I commend them on the way in which they have taken charge of their learning and have supported each other throughout the year.  I also commend their teachers who have been so supportive of their students this year either online or on-site.

Wednesday was Remembrance Day and the SRC team sold poppy items so we could visibly support this important event. As a community we listened to the words of gratitude and thanks to those who died in the First World War and subsequent wars. The last post was also played by one of our music students and we observed a minute’s silence.  Wendy Harvey, our Director of Student Leadership & Engagement, accompanied a small group of students to the local RSL to lay a wreath on behalf of our school.

Finally I acknowledge the significance of NAIDOC week to us as a local community and to all Australians. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the advocacy of Aboriginal groups and organisations in the 1920s and 1930s, which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal Australians.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the NAIDOC theme is: Always Was, Always Will Be.

The theme acknowledges that this nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact; that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.

I wish you all the best.
