Reading
Students will continue to engage with a variety of texts. They will listen to, read, view, interpret and evaluate spoken, written and multimodal texts designed to inform and entertain.
Students will continue to develop their understanding of how texts, including media texts, are influenced by context, purpose and audience. They will use a variety of reading strategies including figurative language and identifying author’s purpose in texts. Students will continue to use their Lexile reading books and the associated quizzes to consolidate reading comprehension.
Writing
Students will consolidate how to write a Narrative text using the correct structure and language features, in particular noun, adjectival and adverbial clauses. Students will be using a rubric for teacher feedback and the ‘T.A.G’ (Tell, Ask and Give) process to give peer to peer feedback to improve their writing.
Speaking and Listening
Students will communicate with peers and teachers and the wider community in a range of face-to-face and online/virtual environments. They will listen to discussions, reflect and give feedback during class meetings and group work. Students will complete and present a report on an issue related to our Inquiry unit, ‘Data and Decision’ using developing oral skills.
Number and Algebra
Students will be learning the value of numbers and applying that knowledge in everyday situations. They will explore Money and Financial Mathematics, in particular how to plan for and prepare a financial budget using the correct mathematical protocols. Students will also solve word problems using the four processes, involved in budgeting.
Measurement and Geometry
Students will explore Location and Transformation. They will use simple scales, legends and directions to interpret information contained in basic maps. Students will create symmetrical patterns, pictures and shapes and describe translations, reflections and rotations of two dimensional shapes.
Statistics and Probability
Students will be consolidating Data Representation using spreadsheets to record collected data used for financial budgeting.
In the unit, Data and Decision, students will consider the difference between needs and wants. They will examine the types of resources that we have and the nature and meaning of work. Students will be engaged in economics and business as they work in groups to develop a business plan that they will present to younger students in their school.
Students will explore the sacrament of Confirmation. They will investigate the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, the signs and symbols of the Holy Spirit and related scripture references. Students will continue to develop their understanding of Advent and Christmas and the main people who made this event so special.
In Digital Technology students will continue an online course on Cyber-bullying. They will investigate the correct protocols which needs to be followed when online. Students will learn how to identify the dangers when online and identify strategies to avoid them.
They will be using a variety of ICT skills and digital devices to create individual workflows. Students will learn how to create a digital application and spreadsheets which they can use to enhance their work presentation. Students will continue to learn the skills of coding to prepare them for programming in the future. Students will revise the correct ICT protocols when accessing any digital devices.
Students will continue to develop strategies that build their wellbeing and resilience from the ‘Berry St Model.’ They will continue to develop techniques that will support them to be ‘Ready to Learn.’ Students will explore, ‘Growth MindSet’ where they will learn how a positive mindset can help them achieve their life and learning goals.
Library will occur on a Friday (Gr4/5TR, Gr 5/6FA and Gr 5/6MG) All students are to have a library bag or satchel. Students borrow and return appropriate books from the library on a weekly basis. They are to select texts of interest, for research and at their individual lexile level in order to complete related quizzes.
This term students will refine more complex motor skills such as overarm bowling, two-hand strike, accurate throwing and catching through Cricket and Softball. They will also work within groups to create a game with established rules and procedures in a safe and fair environment. The school Swimming program will also take place this term.
In term four, Year Five and Year Six students will explore still life drawing. Students will begin the unit by looking at 3D shapes and developing their skills in adding shade and tone. Year Five and Year Six students will then look at the artwork of British artist David Hockney. Inspired by Hockney’s most recent digital artwork and exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, students will create their own digital still life image using the app Brushes Redux.
Year 5/6 students will compose, arrange and perform music for an intended audience. Students will respond to music they listen to, discussing what they notice and what appeals to them and why. They will practise reading and writing conventional notation on the treble stave. Students will explore the role of the conductor within their groups. They will learn and sing traditional and non traditional Christmas carols.
In Term four, students from year 5 and 6 are learning to reading bilingual signs, comparing Chinese words to their English equivalent, and recognising how key characters in expressions contribute to the overall meaning. They are learning how to conduct a self-introduction and discussing the concept of ‘self’/我, exploring questions such as name, age, school and hobby-related information.
