2019 Book Lists and College Charges

As you would be aware the College recently emailed all our families the Booklists and College Charges sheet for 2019.

This of course is a change from previous years and we are confident that our College families will support us in streamlining our processes.

If you are unable to print a hard copy of the College Charges, these are available at the Administration Office to collect.

Please refer to the attachments in the Compass Newsfeed for the College Charges sheet for 2019.

RSC Work Futures EXPO 2019

As we reach the end of the 2018 school year we have a firm view of how this expo will be presented on Wednesday 19th June 2019.  During the next few weeks our work will be to produce a ‘model’ of the project so that early in 2019 we will bring together people from those companies and businesses who have offered their time and people to be part of this college initiative for the benefit of our senior students.

Our focus is to ensure that these presenters understand Ringwood Secondary College’s values so we can guide them to tailor their talks to the senior year students, offering a clear and comprehensive explanation of what their workplaces do currently, and how they manage changes that are already in the workplaces of many organisations.  We want these presentations to have a commonality which will clearly show the job opportunities and options, so comparisons can be readily made for those parents and students present between the various jobs being presented at our Expo.

We anticipate that this expo will showcase a wider range of job opportunities than what the students currently see available.  These presentations could offer job opportunities that may lead students away from fast-food outlets for part-time work, to places where they may be able to do work experience that can provide long-term employment, where on-the-job training is offered and for those who show initiative to be directed to attempt more fulfilling and more interesting work.

In the Ringwood High School days we saw students who started work, when job opportunities were limited to traditional jobs during the 1950s and ‘60s, who have held senior and executive positions in major companies, so with so many more new technology opportunities available in the 21st Century we should expect to see our current students achieving similar management positions over time.

Jobs these days can no longer be defined by gender as they were in the past.  The RACV Royalauto magazine, November 2018, has an excellent article about girls who have trained as auto-electricians, mechanics and spray-painters, jobs previously considered to be done by male employees.  We expect our Expo could also present job opportunities as yet unknown to our students, thus widening their employment choices for the future.

In the remaining weeks of 2018, the Work Futures committee will prepare briefs for Lead Teachers and student groups to assist in the creation, preparation of documentation of Expo-related tasks helping us to deliver top quality material for our Expo on Wednesday 19th June 2019.

Facilities

Over recent weeks there has certainly been a flurry of activity at the College in regards to facilities. Here is a brief summary

•    Working Bee-Hill St bank project.  A big thankyou to members of the facilities team who came along to our recent working bee and transformed a large section of the Hill St bank through mulching and planting

•    Administration Air conditioning units-new support timbers installed

•    Food Technology-An industrial dishwasher was recently installed and the main preparation area has undergone major building works to improve the functionality of the area

•    Gymnasium refurbishment project-We have commenced the refurbishment project. Currently the backboards are being modified and new glass boards should be erected by the end of the week.

•    Front fence-making slow but steady progress

•    Junior School-defects are now all rectified

We are also planning for several projects over the upcoming Christmas break and in the next couple of weeks the design process for the new building should hopefully ramp up. Enjoy the accompanying photos.

From the Chaplain

Where did October go?

I looked at the calendar just yesterday and realised we are now into November, and by that I mean nearly the end of it!

It only takes a wreath on the traffic lights and decorations in shopping centres and my children’s excitement levels are automatically piqued for this season.

Whilst it is a joyful part of the year for a lot of us, this is not the case for everyone. For some people it can be a very lonely time, a time that just reminds them of what they don’t have or have lost.

In amidst these contrasting experiences I am so excited about a new initiative that the school has ignited this year.

It is our first ever ‘Alternative to Schoolies program’. Eight inspiring Year 12 students are heading out to Melbourne CBD for an opportunity to look outside of themselves and hear stories from people doing it a bit tough, even living on the street. These students will participate in some community service activities, whilst setting some great foundations for the next phase of their journey. What a great opportunity for them to grow and be challenged and shaped by those around them.

We have so much to learn from one another as we share this life together and try to work it all out. I hope you get the opportunity to share the joy you have with others this Christmas or maybe you may need to be on the receiving end.

Whatever the case maybe look for opportunities to step out of your comfort zone and make a difference.
