KJ

Recently, KJ have been learning about what their first home looks like in Geography. It is important to learn about Earth - the planet of our birth because this planet is the only place we’ll ever live. A highlight in Geography for Hartley and Layne has been colouring in planet Earth because they think colouring is fun. A habit of mind that Hartley and Layne use when learning in Geography is “Remaining Open to Continuous Learning” because if Hartley and Layne learn something new, it will be easy for them to memorise and build on their prior knowledge since geography can be a vital aspect in life.

KM

In the Key Learning Areas of science and geography, KM have been illustrating their homes. They also got to discuss what the favorite part of their house is; Abigail and Masie both agreed they liked their room the best. Abigail and Masie’s highlight during the task was the drawing and colouring where they could add detail. The Habit of Mind they used the most was applying past knowledge to new situations when they had to remember what their houses look like and how many rooms there are.

Year 1

1J

In science, 1J have been learning how animals adapt to their climate and grow. They have been observing hermit crabs to determine how they protect themselves with a shell. They furthered their understanding of how butterflies, at first are a caterpillar and mealworms go through the process of changing into a beetle. 1J have grown sprout houses which are zip lock bags with soil and a plant of their choice in them. The sprout houses have been on the window to maximize the growth of the plants.

1M

Last week in science 1M were learning about living things and their amazing habitats, by planting and decorating their very own sprout house and taking care of  fascinating hermit crabs, mealworms and caterpillars. They learnt that mealworms transform into dark wing beetles and caterpillars turn into butterflies. Along with this, they also studied the life cycles of these creepy creatures. In addition, they planted surprise seeds into a sprout house (a zip lock bag that was decorated), which 1M stuck to a window while they watched and tracked it’s growth. Leo and Sadie said that they used the habit of mind ‘Responding with Wonderment and Awe’ at the hermit crabs and sprout houses!

Year 2

2M & 2J

Year 2 have been learning about water and how to save it. Mrs Haritos and Mrs Fursy have joined their classes together to learn about the importance of saving water. 2J & 2M now knows of some ways to reduce water usage. They can do this by: turning the tap off, using the half flush button on the toilet ,hopping in the shower for a shorter amount of time and trying hard not to use lots of dishes or cutlery. The message of reduce and reuse has been discussed when thinking about saving water and avoiding wastage. Everyone can try these water saving ways at home!

Year 3

3J

Year 3 have been focusing on Antarctica recently. Ollie and Thomas enjoyed learning about the weather and how you need to survive if you travel down to Antarctica. In groups they designed a house suitable for  living in Antarctica. Year 3 have also been focusing on the Earth in science. They have been studying and designing a way to grow life on Earth and with that they are creating pods to understand the lifestyle. In groups they have collaborated on an idea to create a prototype. They drew clothes, rooms and heaters. Some habits of minds they have used are creating, imagining and innovating and thinking flexibly.

3M

Imagine if the world died. In year 3M this week they have been doing geography and science. In geography they have designed a pod to start life again when earth dies. In the pod there are five different zones. The work, fun, exercise, sleeping and eating zones. They also made up a planet called Hebar. In science they have been learning about the difference between Australian houses and Antarctic houses, also they have been learning about how people in Antarctica live and what they wear. Thanks to Dylan and Tierna for informing us about the wonderful learning opportunities that are being had in Y3!

Year 4

4M

Over the past few weeks in geography, 4M have been learning about how to help the earth; in the unit ‘Cry of the Earth’. Lucy R and Khale said that they are learning about ways to save the earth from getting dirty and ruined. 4M divided their discoveries into sections and learnt things about the earth in different periods of time; so that they could find a solution to major issues and try to fix the ongoing problems. Khale and Lucy R both commented that the significant Habits of Mind they had to use were, staying open to continuous learning and thinking flexibly, to try to think of new or better ways to help the earth if one of the ideas didn’t work out. A highlight for Khale and Lucy R was that they have gained increased knowledge and now know how they can contribute at home to save our planet earth.

4J

This week in Geography, Pat and Neve have been involved in a unit study called ‘Cry of the Earth’ where they learn about the environmental threats caused by humans who are damaging waterways which leads to damage of the ecosystem. 4J are researching solutions to save the earth and recording their findings in there books. Neve said that the habits of mind she has had to use is thinking flexibly as well as persistence to find solutions that will save the earth. Something Pat has enjoyed doing is finding out why the earth is crying and researching ways to cure the Earth.

Year 5

5J

During science, 5J has been turning into astronauts and exploring space. They have been learning about the solar system and the sun. Exploring solar energy, 5J created solar-powered ovens and tested them by melting marshmallows; each student made a different design and observed the results. They have also begun a geography unit exploring natural and manmade landmarks and making a digital presentation explaining their knowledge.

We hope 5J will continue working hard, learning and enjoying the rest of the unit!

5M

“Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef is 100 times bigger than the Sydney Opera House?” -Finn D 5M

This term 5M have been exploring man-made and natural features in Geography and have been having a blast! 5M have been digging deep to find facts about natural and man-made features to find the similarities and differences between the two. Each student in 5M has had the opportunity to research a natural and man made feature and collect facts and images into Pic Collage. 5M are stoked to learn more about natural and man made features.

Year 6

This semester year Six have been learning about some primary industries involved in food and fibre production, and where our food and fibres come from, particularly the process of how food turns up on our plates at home. 6M has been outlining this process using a visual and written flow-chart which is a chart with images and small captions, it is also numbered or includes arrows to direct the reader to the next point.

Year Six are also transferring their fully grown succulents into glass jars to sell at our school fete this weekend. Most have now finished their greenhouse journals for their plants and are decorating the jars for aesthetics so the buyers numbers are increased. Make sure to buy some succulents at our school fete!
