6A

A Fun Day of Learning at Scienceworks

To further explore the Level 6’s Earth and Space Inquiry question for Term 2, ‘What is our place in the universe?’ the Year 6 learners went to Scienceworks to develop their Science literacy skills and challenge their scientific thinking and curiosities.  By participating in an interactive show called ‘Solar System Odyssey’ at the Planetarium, the Year 6 students deepen their understandings of the Solar System, including the icy rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s volcano-ridden moon lo, the subzero methane lakes of Saturn’s moon Titan, the Sun and the Moon. The show was then followed by a guided presentation ‘What’s in the sky tonight?’ whereby the students got to experience what we can be seen in the sky at various stages of the night.  The presenter highlighted the Milky Way, Stars, planets and constellations   The students also had the opportunity to apply the mindset of a scientist and justify new knowledge and understandings by exploring the Scienceworks exhibits, such as Sportsworks, Beyond Perception and General Viewing.

When reflecting on their key learning and takeaways from the excursion, the 6A students made the following statements;

Inuka- “I learnt about the physical limits of my body in Sportsworks.”
Sachi- “Learning about the star constellations, in particular Sirius”
Hayden- “I enjoyed visiting the Planetarium and learning about Earth, Mars and Jupiter.”
Adam- “The Planetarium gave me the opportunity to explore the universe and constellations”
Vedanth- “The visuals at the Planetarium helped me understand Space more deeply.
Vinu- “During our Inquiry Unit I have learnt that Earth’s gravitational pull helps Earth sustain life.
Trisha- “The Planetarium helped me understand how we can protect Earth.”
Olivia- “The Planetarium taught us that Earth is our only home and that terraforming other planets wouldn’t work because it would be either too cold or too hard to live in.”
Senupa- “One of the unmissable parts of Scienceworks was the Planetarium.”
Enya- “The Planetarium supported us in learning about the Solar System in a creative way. I further had the opportunity to learn the meaning behind each star.”
Joshua- “The visuals during the Planetarium presentation helped me learn about the sky at night.”
Oscar- “The Sportworks exhibition interested me, as I learnt how the human body works.”
Dylan- “I liked visitng Beyond Perception, especially the snow blowing because it was satisfying.”
Arnold- “In the Planetarium I learnt more about what a planet needs to make it liveable for humans.”
Navya- “I learnt about the moons on each planet. It was my first excursion, so I was very excited.”
Abdullah- “Learning about different planets in the Planetarium. For example Jupiter is a gas planet.”
Mahi- “I learnt about the different moons that can provide life to Earth.”
Pranov- “I liked the Planetarium’s unique feature of the 360 degrees view of the sky.”
Nuyara- “I enjoyed immersing in the experience of being in a spaceship at the Planetarium.”
Ellen-“I learnt about Jupiter and Saturn’s moons and how the constellations create images.”
Yash- “Walking amongst the gigantic machines that keep our world running and wandering through impressive exhibitions.”
Dilu- “I immensely enjoyed experiencing the real-life environment of Space and participating in hands on tasks, which gave me a wider perspective of Science.”
Arena-“I enjoyed the Planetarium because it provided me with a deeper perspective of other planets and their moons.  It sparked my curiosities to learn more.”
Raavi- “When I visited Scienceworks I expanded my knowledge of Space and Science with the support of futuristic technology.”
Fin- “I liked the snow machine at the Beyond Perception exhibition.”
Lu Lu- “I learnt about the constellations and how the Indigenous Elders named them.”
William- “I learnt about the stars and the constellations and what they represent in the sky.”
