Year 2 Celebration Newsletter

Wow! What a terrific term we have had! We have had a great time of exploring, learning, and investigating. The highlight of the term was our excursion to Werribee Zoo.

In reading, we learnt about the features of fiction and non-fiction texts. We continued to practice making predictions and activated our prior knowledge to help us better understand what we are reading. We also deepened our comprehension strategies to become even better readers!

For writing, we explored persuasive book reports and wrote our very own fantasy narrative! We used our imaginations and creativity while practicing our writing skills.

In maths, we focused on additive thinking. We learnt how to add larger numbers and solve word problems using addition and subtraction. We also continue our work on telling time and become more confident with reading and writing time.

In Inquiry, we learnt about the different types of living things that exist and their unique characteristics. We explored how living things interact with their environment and the important roles they play in our world. We also had an exciting day out at Werribee Zoo and learnt about wild animals and their habitats.

We hope you all have an enjoyable winter’s break, spending some quality family time together. We look forward to seeing everyone back for an exciting term 3 of learning!

Japanese

This term in Japanese the Year 2 students applied their prior knowledge of colours and numbers to various activities through the theme “Where is the Green Sheep?”. They completed a booklet to encourage their reading and writing of Japanese characters. Students developed their speaking and listening skills through making sentences with colours such as “The sheep is [colour].” Students also learnt about cultural events in Japan such as Children’s Day and Tanabata Festival.

Performing Arts

Grade Two students explored the concept of pitch in music, learning about high and low sounding notes and where they sit on a musical scale. Using xylophones and Boomwhakers, they followed basic music and played simple songs. They also created their own short songs to play and share with their peers.

During term 2, students have been working on ball skills. They have worked with a partner and in small groups. Students have been introduced to a variety of skills such as throwing, catching, bouncing and kicking. They have used a variety of equipment including soccer balls, basketballs and netballs.
