Year 1 Celebration Newsletter
Reading
Our Year 1 students have made remarkable strides in their reading journey this year. They have focused on developing their decoding accuracy with non-fiction texts, enhancing their ability to comprehend and extract information. We have also seen significant improvements in their reading fluency, as they have practised reading aloud each day with expression and confidence.
Writing
In Writing, students have been immersed in creating information reports on ants, worms, and snails, aligning with our inquiry unit on living things. They have demonstrated their ability to research, organise information, and present their findings in a clear and structured manner. Publishing our work on Book Creator using iPads was a great way for students to incorporate their ICT skills, and their reports truly showcased their creativity and knowledge.
Maths
We have delved into various mathematical concepts this term. Students have explored additive concepts and strategy development, strengthening their ability to solve mathematical problems using different strategies. Additionally, they have ventured into data and graphing by creating surveys and interviewing fellow students around the school. This hands-on experience has enhanced their understanding of collecting and representing data. We also engaged in activities related to money, identifying and ordering Australian coins, and explored the concept of mass and location.
Inquiry
Our focus on biological sciences, particularly living things and their habitats, has sparked curiosity and wonder among our students. They have had the opportunity to explore different habitats and learn about the various living organisms that thrive within them. A highlight of our term was the Wild Action Incursion, where students had an up-close and personal experience with a variety of animals, connecting their learning to real-life encounters. It was a memorable experience that fostered a deeper appreciation for the natural world and Australian animals.
We are incredibly proud of how well our students have worked this term. Their smooth transition is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and adaptability. Thank you for your ongoing support.
The Year 1 Team,

Japanese
This term in Japanese the Year 1 students applied their prior knowledge of colours and numbers to various activities through the theme “Where is the Green Sheep?”. They completed a booklet to encourage their reading and writing of Japanese characters. Students developed their speaking and listening skills through making sentences with colours such as “The sheep is [colour].” Students learnt about cultural events in Japan such as Children’s Day and Tanabata Festival.
Performing Arts
Grade One students learned how to follow a basic musical pattern using percussion instruments, learning about crotchets and quaver notes, as well as the importance of rests of silence in music. They created their own musical patterns to play and share with their peers, enjoying playing the role of ‘conductor’ for their group.
PE
During term 2, students have been working on ball skills. They have worked with a partner and in small groups. Students have been introduced to a variety of skills such as throwing, catching, bouncing and kicking. They have used a variety of equipment including soccer balls, basketballs and netballs.
