Year 6 Celebration Newsletter

Maths

The Grade 6 students undertook a unit on multiplicative thinking. We explored strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. In Measurement, we looked at using appropriate units of measurement and solving problems relating to perimeter and area. In Statistics and Probability, the students collected data with the use of a survey and appropriately present the results using a graph. Students made observations on the outcomes using unbiased statements. Students continued to build on their automatic recall of multiplication facts through daily fluency sessions.

Reading

During Term Two students in Year 6 undertook a novel study based on the text ‘Worse Things’ by Sally Murphy. Students unpacked language features such as simile, metaphor, repetition, alliteration and rhyme. There were opportunities for students to identify themes, summarise the text and discover interesting and new vocabulary. Together with the teacher, they worked on individual reading goals and had the opportunity and support to practise applying specific strategies in their independent and small group reading tasks. Students were also tested on their reading comprehension and fluency during individual conferences.

Writing

Throughout Term Two students looked at writing to entertain. Students developed narratives by planning an original idea and expanding on it. There was a focus on descriptive writing, following the correct structure and incorporating language features such as simile and metaphor. Students refined their work to ensure there is correct punctuation and sentence fluency for the text type. Students also undertook a poetry unit where they will be exposed to a variety of structures and topics. A focus was on word choice, tone and figurative language.

Inquiry

Year 6 students undertook a geography and biology unit, exploring habitats and the different adaptations of living things in these environments. Students discovered the characteristics of the different habitats, their conditions, the different needs provided for plants and animals that live in them. The Year 6 students also explored the human impact on these environments and how sustainability plays a big role in our society.

Wellbeing

Students continued to enhance their wellbeing this term through the Resilience Project. Students explored the importance of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness through a series of carefully planned and targeted learning experiences. There was a focus on how students can recognise their personal strengths, their own feelings and the feelings of others to improve mental health outcomes.

Japanese

This term in Japanese the Year 6 students developed their reading, writing, speaking and listening through the theme “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. They expanded their vocabulary and learnt how  to write full sentences such as “On Monday, I ate an apple”. They continued to learn the three scripts of Japanese, with hiragana being the main focus. Students also learnt about cultural events in Japan such as Children’s Day and Tanabata Festival.

Performing Arts

Grade Six students proudly shared their ‘Two Minute Fairy-tale’ with their Prep Buddies, which they had been working on throughout term one. They then moved on to explored the concept of empathy when they created their own short Claymations based on the themes of inclusion and exclusion.

PE

During term 2, students have been able to refine their techniques in a variety of bat and ball skills. They have worked on throwing and catching skills, using a tennis ball. Students have been able to demonstrate their foot skills as in soccer. They have been given the opportunity to participate in a tennis program where they were able to show their skills using a racquet. Students have worked with a partner and in small groups.
