Amazed at the Changes

Dean Winter with St Virgil’s College Principal, Jon Franzin, in the Centenary History Centre

Dean Winter MHA visited the Austins Ferry Campus recently and like other ‘returnees’ was amazed at the developments since his time there as a student, 1998 - 2001.

In his final year at the ‘Ferry’ he was a prefect and captained the senior cricket team.

Dean went on to study Economics at the University of Tasmania. He was the CEO at TasICT, the peak body representing Tasmania’s information, communications and technology sector. He was – and continues to be – a passionate advocate for Tasmania’s digital potential as well as developing policies that can grow the ICT sector in the State. From 2014 to 2018, he held senior roles within the Tasmanian arms of iiNet, TPG and Optus Business.

Dean was elected as a Kingborough Councillor in 2014.  In 2018, at the age of 33, he was elected as Mayor of Kingborough - youngest Mayor in Kingborough’s 110-year history.

He became a Labor candidate for the Franklin Division in the May 2021 State Election and was successful. He is currently the Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Finance, Energy and Racing.

Dean, his wife Allison and two small children – George and Harriet - live in Kingston.
