Train to Austins Ferry

Received a good response to the query as to when the St Virgil’s train service terminated. Answer: The end of 1969.

One wonders what the climb up from the SVC siding was like on a cold wet winter’s day. How much more convenient was the replacement - Creswell Coaches – delivered to the ‘front door’.

A couple of readers made mention of the death of St Virgil’s student Paul Lewinski who was killed in a train accident. To set the record straight - Paul, a Year 9 student at the time, was killed while returning by train from a YCS (Young Christian Students) picnic at National Park on 14 May 1970, sometime after the Austins Ferry service stopped.

The following tributed was contained in the 1970 Virgilian.

Paul started at Austins Ferry in 1968. His two brothers – Peter and John – also attended the College. John, whose three sons – Chris, Tim & Robert – also attended SVC – served on the St Virgil’s College Board from 2002-09 during which time he was its chair 2004-07.
