The Years 10 and 11 exams have been completed, in the new Brigid building which was highly successful.

The music staff has again been extremely busy with their preparations for the music soirees on successive evenings at Tullow. Well done to everyone involved. Semester Two has also commenced for the entire school this week, the first time we have rolled over all year levels together prior to the end of Term 2.

The Multicultural Dinner is on Saturday 5th August in Kennedy Hall. The flyer for this, including the TryBooking for the free tickets, is available below.

The new artificial grass area is being well utilised by students, who are now using the area under the front oak tree.

We watched the final signage for Brigid being erected this week, it looks particularly fabulous at night when it is lit up.

Best wishes for the coming holiday break. Keep safe.

Year 8 Personal Development Day - 19th May

The theme was “Be Body Positive”.  We learned about body image and how we should treat ourselves kindly. Kelly Nash, a comedian and body positivity educator, came to speak to us about body image. She told us about personal experiences in her life and how she had once in her life thought that she was “not up to the beauty standards”.  She talked about how she then later realized that she is beautiful no matter what. She was funny, interesting and interactive so I think she taught us all something.

We also played games (there was an escape room game, and it was fun) and watched videos that people from each Homeroom made about a healthy lifestyle. Finally, we watched a documentary called “Embrace Kids” which was written by Taryn Brumfitt. It was about how we should be inclusive and how the kids in the movie learned to be themselves in the time they spent during their sessions with Taryn Brumfitt and each other. Overall the documentary was interesting and I'm sure that everyone would have learned something from watching it. PD day was great and very enjoyable.

Music Camp - 26th to 28th May

A couple of weeks ago, our music students went on a Music Camp led by our wonderful Music Department - Mr. Hickey, Ms. Addis & Mr. Vague.

Here is a reflection on Emelyne's experience at Music Camp:

"On May 26-28th I attended my first Music Camp. Our group consisted of the juniors (HONK) and senior groups (Concert Band, Heartstrings & Soul Collective). Everyone was up bright and early ready to board the bus and perform for primary school students. The first stop was St Elizabeth's and next, Emerson School.

A quick lunch and milkshake and everyone was back on the bus. We finally stopped at Warburton with lovely scenery and plenty of shops. Arriving at the Arrabri Lodge, we dropped off our luggage and settled into our cabins. The rest of the weekend was full of games, food, and rehearsals!

Meal time was like a feast with pancakes, hash browns, toast, and cereal all for breakfast. For lunch, we had the most delicious burgers and sandwiches. Dinner, chicken schnitzel and lasagna. To top it all off, ICE-CREAM and lollipops.

Boredom wasn’t a thing as the camp had plenty of games to play during your free time, mini golf, archery, volleyball, and the games room! Events would be thrown every day. Morning group warm-ups, instrument rehearsals, sectionals, and a mini-concert at the end of the camp.

The highlight of your day would be the night competitions, gathering with all your friends, solving trivia questions, and of course, trying to win first place.

Music camp was a blast and I am so glad I didn’t pass on this opportunity. I will definitely be coming back to the Arrabri Lodge next year for another fun camp!"

VCE Vocational Major Excursion - 2nd June

On Friday, June 2, the VCE VM students were lucky enough to go on an excursion to the Victorian Trades Hall Council. We were able to learn all about the world of the workplace, where we learned about misconduct and our rights as employees and workers, taxes and financial advice, and what we should expect on payslips and workplace contracts. We even learned about politics and basic human rights.

Our tour guide was kind enough to give us a tour of the Victorian Trades Hall, where we went into nearly every room and got to learn about the history that happened right where we were standing. You could even see the bullet holes in the wall from 1915 when the Trades Hall got broken into and there was a shootout between policemen and armed bandits.

Personally, I could not believe how much history happened in that one building. As a student who has been on a lot of excursions in my short lifetime, this has had to be the most interesting and educational experience!

Year 12 RE Community Service - 13th June

This term, our RE class has had multiple opportunities to visit St Joseph's Primary School as a part of our community service. It is always so fun spending time with the little preps, and helping them with their reading and writing activities. On one particular visit, the Preps were celebrating 'Family Day', and I was fortunate enough to be paired with a prep as their 'big sister' for the morning! Overall, this experience has been very enjoyable, and has brought back a lot of fun and happy memories.

Going to St Joseph's is definitely a highlight of Year 12 so far. Seeing their eyes fill with joy and their smiles grow bigger as soon as we walk into their room, truly makes our day. They have hilarious stories every single visit and they never fail to make us laugh. We look forward to our visits and when the day comes around we feel nothing but excitement to see our class and have a great time with them. Doing this inspires us to become teachers ourselves one day. Both the children and their teacher, Mr. Bailey, are very welcoming and he never fails to make our visit fun and enjoyable.

We are very excited to continue this experience next term!

Year 12 RE Community Service - 14th June

Today during our community service session at St Joseph’s Primary School, we helped the Grade 1/2 classes with their reading.  We also made a production line to help all four Prep classes to make a salad sandwich, each Prep student telling us which vegetables they wanted; some took a bit of convincing to have any vegetables at all!

Killester College Energy Breakthrough - Seeking Sponsors

For the past year, the Killester College Energy Breakthrough Club (KCEB) has worked extensively to prepare for Maryborough’s 24-hour race in November. Roughly 30 students have been involved in Energy Breakthrough, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) challenge with students designing, building, and maintaining an aerodynamic tricycle. Students from Years 7 to 12 have embarked on a hands-on project, all whilst collaboratively working as a team. Students are continuously working towards improving their fitness in preparation for the race and developing new skills in different areas. The extracurricular club strives to promote women in STEAM and highlight the importance of women working in male-dominated work industries. KCEB allows students to experience new opportunities that may develop their skills in STEAM while having fun!

Fundraising is a crucial aspect of our KCEB club, providing the necessary equipment and facilities to further expand our potential and push past any limitations. The KCEB club would be extremely grateful for any funding opportunities as we are open to sponsorships and all the support we receive from our community, for instance, donations and food fundraisers. In thanks for your support, sponsors will be granted advertisement of their company on the team uniform, the tricycle, or among Killester’s various advertising platforms (advertisements options will vary).

If you are interested in offering us a sponsorship and becoming a part of the KCEB community, or want more details about KCEB, feel free to contact us through our representatives on the poster attached. For more information regarding Energy Breakthrough, please visit this website https://www.eb.org.au/.

With thanks,
