Term 3

Term 3 has been a busy term so far for the year 12 cohort. To start week 2 the students attending the TRAG presentation at the Peninsula Community Theatre on Wilson’s Road. TRAG stands for Teenagers Road Accident Group. The program was developed with the aim at highlighting the awareness of young people to the dangers of modern driving. The presenters consisted of CFA members, Ambulance and Police Officers, and those who have first hand experience with road trauma. The goal of the session was to raise student awareness of their responsibilities when they get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. The session was very confronting for the students but had a clear message: ‘DRIVE4LIFE’. The students debriefed with a BBQ all together in the courtyard when returning form the presentation.

The year 12 PE class went on an excursion to test out their fitness components. They took part in activities such as the vertical jump, aerobic capacity sprint test, reaction time agility test and gps tracking. Two of our students Harry Aylett and Matt Bullock took part in the V02max test. This test measures oxygen uptake which is a key physiological measure of cardiovascular fitness and can help to explain differences in sporting performance between individuals. It tells us the maximum amount of oxygen that our bodies are able to consume when exercising. Harry and Matt both dominated in this test showcasing their athletic ability.

In week 3 the year 12’s had their second elevate session. This session is called ‘The finishing line’ and was designed to prepare them for their upcoming exams.

Court Visit in Melbourne to reinforce students’ knowledge and understanding of the justice system and those who administer it.

The excursion enabled the students to gain a first-hand experience of the Victorian justice system through providing a unique opportunity to interact with Court judges and observe proceedings before a court.

The students had an early start in order to negotiate the disrupted transport system into Melbourne. Once they arrived it was straight into a County Court to meet a County Court judge. The judge outlined their role in court proceedings and well as giving insight into cases they had heard and their pathway to becoming a County Court judge.

Students then had the opportunity to ask the judge a range of questions. They were commended on the quality of their questions which focused on issues which arise in the operation of the Victorian legal system, what is like to be a judge, and clarification of issues relating to the VCE Legal Studies Course.

The group then stayed on to observe a criminal sentence plea which was an excellent illustration of the role of different parties in a trial.

After a well-deserved lunch it was then off to the Supreme Court. Students had great fun taking part in a mock trial in one of the Supreme Court’s courtrooms. They were then invited to observe the handing down of a criminal sentence in a very high profile case.

The court visit really did bring to life the theory studied in the classroom as well as giving an insight in future careers in law.

Year 12 Dance

Five of the year 12 Dance students competed at the Phoenix Dance Competition in Frankston over the school holidays. All five of our students earned High Distinction for their performances. They each performed their self choreographed Technique Solo which will be performed for examiners during the VCE examination period. For a couple of the students, it was their first ever competition. I am so proud of all of the students for giving up their time, and putting themselves out there, to improve and prepare for the end of year exams.
