Indonesian Study Tour

On the 24th August 16 students from Year 9-12 participated in the Indonesian Study tour to Indonesia. After a full day of flying to Yogyakarta, we relaxed at the hotel and enjoyed our first meal together. Our adventure began Sunday with a visit to a traditional Indonesian village, where we learned to play traditional gamelan music, rode a traditional horse and cart and visited the biggest mall in Yogyakarta. The village was a traditional and unique experience with us noticing how simple and quiet the people lived.

From Monday onwards our itinerary was jam packed. From visiting Prambanan temple, Keraton, the water palace, traditional food and clothing markets and getting up at 3am to see the sunrise at Borobudur temple (the biggest Buddhist temple in the world). The school visits were no doubt some of the biggest highlights of our experiences. The Junior High School students stayed 3 hours after their normal school day had finished in order to play volleyball, basketball and to talk to us. There were many photos and new friends made and the Indonesian students were clearly the champions on the volleyball field. The following day, the Indonesian students share their traditional games and activities with us and in return we taught them all about cricket.

Another highlight included working closely with the University of Islam students where we went to a traditional market and were given a shopping list and money. In small groups, speaking only Indonesian we brought all the ingredients to make stir fry vegetables and nasi goreng (fried rice). From the market we attended a cooking class where we cooked with the ingredients we had brought and we all sat together and shared our meals.

Overall, everyone loved the trip as it was such a surreal experience. A huge thank you to Miss Cruise, Mr Parker and Ms Roberts for making trip run so smoothly. This has been the biggest highlight of our year.
