Tournament of Minds 2021

Cranbourne Campus

Seven intrepid students stepped up to the challenge of competing in Tournament of Minds - a critical and creative thinking, collaborative project. Despite the ever-changing conditions due to Covid-19 they persevered and put together a highly entertaining presentation. They didn't place but had loads of fun and no doubt extended their talents, skills and abilities to think outside the box.

In TOM our team picked the social science challenge, which tasked us to pick an issue from the UN’s SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) and create an interview with people from the past on the topic. We chose to do feminism and interviewed: Leonardo Da Vinci, King Henry VIII, Margaret Thatcher, and Emily Pankhurst. We recorded ourselves using immersive backgrounds on Zoom. This allowed us to look like we were actually in a newsroom, as shown above. I was in charge of editing the video and recording it. We had some troubles along the way, including the exporting of the video which ended up lowering the quality of it. We didn’t win, but we still had fun recording and participating in it.

This year in Tournament of Minds our team of seven chose the Social Sciences where the issue we chose was Gender Equality. This challenge consisted of some members screaming about feminists and how to make the costumes. Other members of the group were surfing through the internet for information about our historic figures. Overall it was a crazy roller coaster filled with panic, stress, laughter and a tonne of craziness!

During 2021’s Tournament of Minds, our team had chosen the challenge of social sciences. The topic at hand was ‘Gender Equality’ as it was voted upon within our group, we then moved onwards into establishing roles so that we can begin working to our best abilities within the time period we had been given. Alex and myself were tasked with making the costumes that everyone would eventually wear although we had a slight difficulty with getting them to everyone as we were still in the sudden snap lockdown.

Hey guys it’s me Vasu. This year was pretty epic, even though doing it over online school was very hard, my team worked very well together. This was a very epic victory royale 10/10 would do it again.

For this year's TOM challenge we chose to approach gender equality. We picked four influential or antifeminist people from different generations and interviewed them about their views and opinions on gender equality. It was a great learning experience that taught me lots about feminism. Tournament of Minds was a great way to learn new things and spend time with different people.
