In our Special Education classes

Online learning

With the ongoing situation with Covid-19, we in the Support Unit successfully transitioned to remote home learning. While it has been a struggle and learning curve for most, many of our students have taken up the challenge and access their online video call lessons on a daily basis. Our students appreciate this and constantly show up with a bright positive attitude.

Many of our students have difficulty accessing technology independently and unfortunately don’t have the luxury of being in frequent communication with their peers. With this in mind, in order to promote inclusion and communication between our students, we provide a Lunchtime Chat video call session every weekday at 1:00pm to allow them the opportunity to catch up and talk to their peers. While it does get a little chaotic with noise (and there is a lot!), the students appreciate the chance to talk with friends and teachers, which has had an immense positive impact on their mental wellbeing in these difficult times.

In order to further prioritise student wellbeing, we also do weekly Friday movie/TV viewing sessions together! This week was an episode of Monsters at Work.

P.S. Remarkably, we had one student who was so eager to remain in class, she accessed the lesson while driving home from her COVID vaccination appointment. Inclusion is what it is all about for our students, even if it can sometimes be a struggle to get there.

RU OK Day

The SRC organised a wonderful RU OK Day!  Asking some thoughtful questions after watching this presentation, this gallery below includes a photo of the students in our  Purple class as they watched the presentation with great interest.

Over a couple of lessons, our students have been creating their own props for The Very Hungry Caterpillar story. When we are able to physicallyreturn to school, students will bring in their props and present an animation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar on their iPads.

Another activity for our students was to recycle cardboard boxes and containers, redecorating them and giving these boxes a new life.  The students did very well - you can see our students working on this task in the photos above.

In our English classes, we prepared a lesson on the subject of Feelings, which was presented to students during our English classes.   Feelings is a series that we have been working on. The photo above also include some of the students' work completed in this series.
