Careers Corner

Career guidance

In career guidance sessions with our students, we often talk about the power of curiosity. Having the courage to be curious helps students explore jobs they didn’t know existed, discover new things about themselves, and realise the extent of their capabilities - and if that curiosity leads to ‘failure’, it will always be a learning experience.

We love the quote below by Dr Edith Edgar from her fantastic book ‘The Gift’.  Dr Edgar is one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors and a psychologist who prefers to call herself a ‘Stretch’ rather than a ‘Shrink’ - which we think is wonderful!

‘Curiosity is vital.  It’s what allows us to take risks.  When we’re full of fear, we’re living in the past that’s already happened, or a future that hasn’t yet arrived.  When we’re curious, we’re here in the present, eager to discover what’s going to happen next.  It’s better to risk and grow, and maybe fail, than to remain imprisoned, never knowing what could have happened.’

Students will be given the opportunity to try and test some new “career adventures” soon. Go beyond your current horizons is the message. “Never give up! because you never know if the next thing you try is going to be the one that works for you”.

My Gateway

During this term, Angelique Boston, Recruitment Officer from My Gateway, our School to Work Partner, delivered two very informative and engaging virtual information sessions to our students and their parents.  Angelique is a great asset to our students.

The first session -                                                     School Based Apprenticeships

Angelique presented to students who are interested in pursuing a School Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship as part of their HSC studies.  The following students from Cecil Hills High School have been scheduled for interviews with My Gateway’s upcoming bulk recruitment days.

  • Bradeen Simon
  • Adam Sadikovic
  • Aleksander Ruskic
  • Malka Ziwa Saaeed
  • Aleksia Kosic
  • Dominic Muscara

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are more than just part-time jobs - they’re a great way to set students up for the career they want while completing the HSC.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW.  They allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school.

A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship combines paid work, training and school; as well as gaining an industry recognised national qualification and credit towards the HSC.  Some apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR.

The second session  -                                                       Full time Apprenticeships/Traineeships

Angelique guided and provided insight to our students interested in pursuing full time Apprenticeships/Traineeships, who might feel lost and nervous about entering the workforce.  The next step for these students is to register for the My Gateway Bulk Industry Recruitment days to be held in October where they will be further assisted with their recruitment process.

We wish these students all the very best during this process and success in their selection of a prospective career.

Thank you to Angelique for engaging with our students (and parents) and for broadening their knowledge of Apprenticeships and Traineeships post school career pathways.

Early Entry Programs

University Early offers are designed to give peace of mind to our students before they sit their HSC exams. These offers are conditional upon students completing their HSC.

We are pleased to advise that in the first offer round of Western Sydney University's HSC True Reward Offer Program, 36 of our Year 12 students received an early offer, based on their Year 11 results, to their preferred Western Sydney University course for 2022.

Another offer round closed on 5 September and we eagerly await to hear of more of our students to receive their early offer.

One offer round using Year 11 results remains open - closing date 7 November at 11.59 pm.

A further offer round using HSC results will also be available (closing date tbc pending HSC subject result release date).  Students can check their eligibility and apply, free of charge, via the Western Sydney University portal

We will be informed of students who are successful in the first offer round for the Macquarie Leaders and Achievers next week and looking forward to hearing about more successes.

Congratulations to those students who have already secured offers. We wish them well in their HSC and beyond.
