Exploring the nature

of migration

Year 9 International Studies are currently studying Culture on the Move – exploring the nature of migration including humanitarian reasons. Rather than the traditional style of learning, in groups the students are conducted an Action Research Project focusing on How Can We Make A Change in Our Community?  They are exploring how to use social media to raise awareness of humanitarian migration.

In Week 8, students received a mentor from Macquarie University’s Leap Up Program – a program that works with refugee high school students to attend university.  In this session, each group workshopped their main idea and developed an action plan to raise awareness of their idea.

Be on the lookout on Cecil Hills High School’s social media as they have been creating posts to inform our community.

As their teacher, I am beyond proud of their maturity, their collaboration and the leadership skills they are demonstrating.  A huge thank you to Mrs Lord, Ms Vuong and Miss Sahid for their help and support of our class.

Group 1 (top left) are exploring how all migrants are given similar labels in society, regardless of where they are from.  Group 2 (top right) are raising awareness of refugee mental health at school. Group 3  (bottom row above) are raising awareness of issue in detention camps and are encouraging the community to sign petitions in support.
