Year 5/6 News

Problem Based Learning (PBL)

The last two weeks of PBL have been very exciting as the students prepared for and presented their business pitches as part of our PBL unit this term. The students were able to work in groups or independently, and the result has been quite extraordinary. The presentations have been of an exceptional standard with some brilliant business ideas being put forward to the teachers and students.

The intention was to select a winning business proposal that would then be supported to bring the idea to fruition. However, with so many great ideas and presentations it is proving an onerous task in selecting a winner. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding how we will progress these ideas. One thing is certain though, there are a number of budding entrepreneurs in our midst!

Special Guest Speaker

As a further learning experience in the PBL business unit that the 5/6 students are currently enjoying, we were fortunate enough to have Rob Seddon (father of Elsie and Harriet) join us as a guest speaker via Zoom. Rob currently works for Worldvision in design and innovation which taps into our focus on Not For Profit businesses that we have been engaging in.

Having also worked in profit based businesses as well, Rob was able to share a range of experiences that tied in with our current unit. Furthermore he also problem solves as part of his role which is at the core of what PBL is and what we are trying to engender with the students. The presentation was both engaging and enlightening and will hopefully arm the students with a better understanding of not only how business works but also the process of problem solving. Thank you Rob!

Buddy Letter Writing

Over the last few weeks, students have been practicing formal letter and resume writing skills, which has supported our PBL unit of Business and Economics. Students were delighted to have the opportunity to write to their Prep buddies (current and incoming Preps) using formal letter writing skills. Students were able to connect and communicate with their junior peers about their experience of online learning, being at home and asking questions of their buddies to initiate a written reply. We are very proud of our senior students who demonstrated their capacity for care and sensitivity, through their heartfelt and supportive words.

This week we have returned to persuasive writing. Students are reviewing and practicing the various persuasive devices and language features used in this style of writing. This writing skill will help students write a persuasive application/cover letter for a chosen PBL related business at the end of term 3.

Keeping connected & challenged in Remote Learning

The Year 5/6's have found creative ways to stay connected and busy during remote learning. They tried their hand (and tested their hand-eye coordination) in the Cup Challenge.
