Senior School Sport

SPORT REPORT  - TERM 3 WEEK 2, 2020

The Senior College made a successful return to sport last week completing trials for Senior Rugby League, and MCS Touch and AFL. Year 7 and 8 House Sport participated in their first of a five-week Cricket Program run by Cricket NSW. The Senior College also successfully held our Annual Athletics Carnival which saw Laurentian House win the Athletics Champion House Cup.

Despite our best efforts to return to a successful representative school sports program this term, our governing body and sport association has informed us that all Term 3 Metropolitan Catholic Schools (MCS) Spring Season sports (AFL, Touch Football, Athletics, Golf and Rugby 7’s) will not go ahead due to the COVID19 situation.

This decision was not made lightly and was supported by all schools in the association. In preparing for the upcoming sport competitions, it was deemed that MCS could not adequately ensure the safety of the staff and students at the venues and as such cancelled all interschool sports competitions for the duration of Term 3.

There was also discussions and plans put in place for our College to host “The Macarthur Cup” where local Catholic, Independent and Anglican high schools were invited to give Year 12 students one last opportunity to showcase their talents across a number of co-curricular events. Unfortunately, this also will not proceed as it falls under the interschool sports category.

Obviously, the staff and students of the College will no doubt be disappointed with this information, but our young men will be given other sporting opportunities to engage in on our College grounds for the remainder of the term. External sport providers will be contacted to provide specific sport programs and the College will run an in-house sports competition.

The scheduled 2020 Marist Cricket Carnivals in Canberra, Bulleen and Warragul in early December has also been cancelled for this year. With competing Colleges involved from across Australia, these carnivals were deemed not viable in the current COVID-19 climate. With the ongoing fluid nature of COVID-19 regulations, the College will continue to assess the viability of its sports programs and our participation in MCS, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges and Marist sporting competitions now and in the future.

Senior College Athletics Carnival 2020

With limited opportunities for the College to participate in a whole school event, this year’s Senior College Athletics carnival was a great outlet for the boys to display their athletic ability and to get out amongst their mates and participate in the various events.

We were blessed with fantastic weather on the day which was only topped by the superb grounds the College Maintenance team provided for the boys to compete. The College staff are the backbone of these whole school events and they are all to be congratulated on their commitment in seeing out their allocated jobs throughout the day. It was a great team effort.

The students are to be congratulated on their behaviour throughout the day and the specific demands each event lay in front of them. Their commitment to sport and physical activity was evident throughout all Championship and Participation races.

The afternoon culminated in the College Age Relays where the fastest students in each age group lit up the track fighting for maximum House Points in the last events of the day.

One record was broken in the field events today with Year 12 student Thomas Campbell broke the Opens Javelin record by throwing 45.47 in the Javelin. Well done Thomas!

In a fitting farewell for the Graduating Class of 2020, Year 12 were able to complete a farewell lap in front of the College and were applauded on their final carnival efforts. With so many opportunities removed from their final year of schooling, I hope the students were able to appreciate the small moments, like College carnivals, which cement friendships and create memories for the ages.

Spring and Summer Sport Options

Spring Sport selections should have been completed by students. Please be advised that the sports/activities the students have selected will commence the first week of Term 3 to Week 5 of Term 3. Student movement in MCS Summer Sports will be occurring – please ensure you select responsibly.

MCS Summer Sport: Trial Information

Senior Basketball (Summer Sport) will be held throughout Term 3 from Weeks 1 to 10.

Senior Cricket trials will commence in Week 6 -10 on College grounds. Students trialling for these teams will be eligible to represent the College in all senior cricket competitions throughout the 2020/2021 seasons.

Students who are not selected for Summer teams in Term 3 will need to return to House Sport or select a Rec Sport option.

Junior Basketball will take place from Week 6 to Week 10 of Term 3.

Junior Cricket trials for MCS teams will take place in Week 1 to Week 6 at an indoor facility then move to College grounds in Weeks 6 to Weeks 10.

This will ensure all students who trial, will get adequate time to display their skills, talents, attitude and behaviour throughout the term.

Students who intend to trial for these sports must select a Rec or House Sport for the first 5 weeks of the term.

The College will offer development programs in Cricket to ensure the development of skills needed to play sports offered by the College. These courses will run in the first 5 weeks of Term 3 for a select number of students.

House Cup

Daily merits have been added each week courtesy of College staff acknowledging our student’s excellent contributions to learning, in and out of the classroom. Senior College Athletics points have now been finalised and added to the respective College Houses. Well done to our Age Champions for their efforts across a very big day in College sport.

Well done to Molloy for leading the College into home stretch of the school co-curricular calendar.
