Introducing Alli Hopkins - our new Assistant Principal

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Alli Hopkins and I have just, very excitedly, commenced working at the College as an Assistant Principal. My previous experience has seen me working in numerous roles in education, including Assistant Principal and Acting Principal at Lucknow Primary School as well as in the Education Department as an Education Improvement Leader across the Outer Gippsland region. Born and bred in Bairnsdale (you'll see my name in College archives), I have a partner who runs his own local business and two children.

Favourite pastimes include keeping fit, reading a good book and travelling (pre-COVID times of course). I am thoroughly excited to join the team at BSC and become part of the journey of continued improvement, promoting excellence for each and every student.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone from next week on. Please come and say hello!

BSC Loaned Student Laptop Instructions

To any student who has been loaned a laptop from the College, please return your device and charger to the ICT Office by Friday 11th December. Senior students who finish school prior to this date please return devices before your last day at the College.

Clontarf Elders Wood Run

Turk, Nate Sommerville, Dylan Bryant, Boris Bryant, Ronan Hudson, Chris Farnham and Lyzell Gadd plus many others worked hard to collect several cubic metres of burning wood over 15 trips.

Clontarf students worked hard over the remote learning winter months to collect wood and deliver it to elders in our community. Thanks to Chris Holmes for giving up his time and gear to support this activity. Students really appreciated getting into the bush and being able to show tangible support for the elders in their community.

Victorian High-Ability Program

This term sees the commencement of the Victorian High-Ability Program at Bairnsdale Secondary College. Eight Year 7 and 8 students were selected by the DET using an algorithm assessing academic ability and readiness to meet the demands of the program. The program will run an English or Mathematics curriculum.

The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) provides students with an opportunity to participate in a 10 week online extension and enrichment course. Throughout the VHAP, students engage with a number of themes. In English, students work with their Virtual Schools Victoria teacher and peers from other schools to examine topics such as dystopian heroes, literary motifs and essay-writing skills. In Mathematics, students will explore the nature of patterns, learn advanced problem solving strategies and develop their mathematical investigation skills.

In Week 1 this term, students have already risen to the challenge and attended their first VHAP class via Remote Learning. We are very much looking forward to coming together as a group to work collaboratively (not to mention face-to-face) for the remainder of Term 4 in the new learning space, ‘Felix’, that has been built in the Wargomerrin building.

Work is almost complete on Felix - our new High Achiever's work space.

New ICT Support Centre for Year 7 - 9 Students

Throughout the holidays, the Wargomerrin building underwent some significant upgrades to its facilities. In addition to the new 'Felix' room, it now also incorporates a new ICT Support Centre, providing students from Year 7-9 with easy access to technical support. This not only minimises the movement of students around the College, but will support students in the transition towards the 1:1 device program in 2021. Starting on Monday 12th October, students will be able to access ICT support between 8:30-4:00 in the new ICT 'Glasshouse’.

Meet a Staff Pet!

Blaze the bunny
Blaze the bunny

During the remote learning period, BSC staff were introduced to each others pets. Some were keen to be part of our Webex meetings!

Introducing the newest member to the BSC Staff Pets Team. Meet Blaze the bunny. Blaze's human is Sam Paynton, BSC Maths and PE teacher. He is a dwarf rabbit that often mistakes himself for a dog, evident through his ability to fetch and come when he’s called! Blaze has thoroughly enjoyed the remote learning period and has made many appearances in Maths lessons. He is not looking forward to the return to face to face learning as that will limit his time to ‘free rein’ around the house.
