Magis report

The Magis camp held last weekend at Point Walter campsite was a terrific success. Twenty two students from Years 7 and 8 participated and the workshop sessions run by David Castelellani from Alpha Motivation and Kathy Boyatzis from Creative Edge Thinking were outstanding as were the superb keynote addresses from senior Magis leaders Ben Linsten, Alex Panther and Genevieve Fergusson-Allen. Special thanks to Mrs Alison O’Connor for her wonderful assistance and contribution to the success of the camp.

A pictorial camp highlights booklet is attached below.

John XXII College Years 8 and 10 British Parliamentary debating teams compete this Saturday and Sunday respectively at Shenton College, whilst three Year 11 and 12 teams will compete next weekend. The event is an exciting all-day competition run by the WA Debating League. Each team competes three times on one day. Warmest thanks to Ms Kirralee Dawson who will be looking after the Year 10 team, and best wishes to members of all five teams.

The Year 11 and 12 House STEM Challenge, part of the Magis-run House Academic Championship, was held this week and resulted in victory for Koolyangarra House in Year 12 ahead of Ward and Campion, whilst Ward won the Year 11 section ahead of St Louis and Koolyangarra.  Top performers were Daniel Poland and Jayden Kounis in Year 12 who were equal first on 27/30 correct responses, one ahead of Ben Linsten. In Year 11 Imogen Walsh, Tom Kitchin and Finlay O’Loughlin were equal first on 27, one ahead of Maddy Parchewsky.  Congratulations to all students who participated – a total of 71 students was again fantastic leadership and house spirit from our senior years.

Our four Opti-MINDS/Creative Edge Thinking teams have now just two weeks to complete their challenges before the competition on 28 August.  Each team will come out of class for one period on that Friday to perform their prepared and impromptu challenges and be filmed by our team led by Mr Sam Tout and Ms Lisa Martella. The videos are then sent to the judging panel, as of course with COVID restrictions the normal performances at Curtin University cannot be held this year. Good luck to all teams. Some wonderful creativity and genius is being displayed!  Special thanks to Mr Damien Connellan for his great work with the two Science-Engineering teams.
