Celebrating John XXIII Day
The Founders are commemorated each year during John XXIII Day celebrations. The College honours these three significant and inspirational people in our heritage, Pope John XXIII, Mary Ward and Ignatius Loyola.
The day showcases our mission to be a community ‘for others’ with all fundraising efforts from the day dedicated to Mary Ward International Australia and Jesuit Missions. Both agencies are facing extraordinary demands, due to the pandemic. Thank you to the entire community for your wonderful help and support on John XXIII Day.
Year 8 Bush Dance
Dressed in their finest checked shirts, Year 8 students embraced an evening of fun at their Bush Dance on Thursday 6 August. They were taught some barn dances and dosey-does on the night from the Mucky Duck Bush Band who also entertained the group with their lively folk and country tunes.
Hay bales, gum leaves, iconic bush scenes on stage and some bunting certainly set the scene in Roncalli Hall for students to show off their bush themed costumes and win prizes whilst dancing the night away with their peers. The Year 12 SRC students led the night by example, joining in on the dances, assisting with the prizes and interacting positively with the Year 8 cohort.
Many thanks go to those involved in making the night possible, including Jeff Jansen, Sam Tout and James Green (AV set up, creating the bush scene and photography), Doug Watson (logistics), the Year 12 SRC students, and the Year 8 Homeroom teachers who supervised the evening.
Well done to the Year 8 students for getting right into the spirit of the night and having a fantastic time.

Mock Trials
Round 2 of the 2020 Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Tuesday night at the Supreme Court. Our team went up against St Stephen’s - appearing for the Defence in a criminal matter involving stealing.
We had five students step into new roles for this round. Year 12 student, Ben Linsten, performed professionally as the solicitor, whilst Year 11 students Eve Cullity, Amalia Olsen and Skye MacMillan took onboard the role of the accused witness, defence witness and judge’s associate respectively. The Judge commended Eve and Amalia for their seamless recall of their witness statements and for handling the pressure of cross examination so well. Rebecca Harsanyi and Ben Negus did a superb job in their first role as barristers, their manner and professionalism was held in high regard by the Judge.
The barristers persuasively argued that the accused did not intend to permanently deprive the owner of his property – and with the Prosecution unable to establish their case, the team won the case and the round.
There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to the trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules and COVID-19 interruptions, enthusiastically attended lunchtime and after school meetings.
Our Round 2 Team included:
- Barrister 1: Rebecca Harsanyi
- Barrister 2: Ben Negus
- Solicitor: Ben Linsten
- Witness 1: Eve Cullity
- Witness 2: Amalia Olsen
- Judges Associate: Skye MacMillan
Congratulations to our 2020 Mock Trial team on another win – and best wishes for the next round.

Year 7 D&D Club
We have started a D & D Club with Year 7s. The students have embarked upon their first Quest, The Lost Mines of Phandelver! The novel, yet eager, band of adventurers has just entered a cave of goblins seeking their lost friend.
We have one place still available in this campaign and next Term, more places and adventures available.
The Club meets on a Wednesday afternoon in the library from 3:30pm -5:00pm. This is for students not participating in NAS sport.
The club is a great and fun way to help students with problem-solving, teamwork, leadership skills and public speaking.

Book Drive
We are pleased to advise of a book drive project between our school, Dalkeith Rotary Club and a PNG based education foundation called Buk Bilong Pikinini.
Buk bilong Pikinini roughly translates as “Books for Children”.
Buk bilong Pikinini was established in 2007 with a mission to try to help increase literacy rates in Papua New Guinea by setting up children's libraries in community based localities.
Buk bilong Pikinini seeks to provide learning opportunities for the most vulnerable children in society who miss out on formal education, and also support those who are fortunate enough to go to school but who lack the most essential tools for literacy; books.
If you have good quality unwanted children’s books to donate, then please place them in the collection boxes in the main Administration building or Student Services.
We look forward to supporting this great community collaboration.
