Digital Learning

Digital Tech News

Throughout Remote Online Learning, the primary students in Year 3 and Year 5 have continued to build upon their understanding of Digital Technologies. As this is incidentally implemented throughout our continued use of Compass as our online learning platform, it is more important than ever that we are understanding the safe and ethical use of Digital Technologies. As always, I will direct you to seek any support from the school and from the eSafety Commissioner if required. The eSafety Commissioner’s Advice Booklet for Parents and Carers focussing on Staying Safe Online during COVID-19 can be accessed here.

The eSafety Commissioner are also running some free webinars for parents and carers in September. These Webinars will be taking a look at TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube and run for 1 hour.

This webinar will cover:

  • popular apps used by young people
  • case studies, research, and targeted advice
  • where to find help and support.
  •  Dates
  • Tuesday 8 September 12:30 pm
  • Wednesday 9 September 7:30 pm
  • Thursday 10 September 12:30 pm

Year 3 Digital Technologies

The Year 3 students have been developing their knowledge of different types of Online Communication, such as;

  • Email
  • Instant Messaging
  • Video Calling

These students conducted a survey of their friends and family around the different types of Online Communication that they are using – I wonder how the results would’ve changed as the whole world seems to be online now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with this, students have been learning about how to stay safe and SMART online – SMART is an acronym for:

  • Safe – Keep safe by being careful what information you give out
  • Meeting – Meeting an online only friend can be dangerous
  • Accepting – Accepting emails, messages or opening files from people you don’t know can lead to problems
  • Reliable – Someone online may be lying about who they are and information you find on the internet may not be reliable
  • Tell – Tell a trusted adult if something makes you feel uncomfortable.

Please see the video from  Dante in 3B explaining some other ways to stay safe online – thanks for your awesome work Dante.

Year 5 Digital Technologies

Our students in Year 5 have been busy working on their own web pages using Microsoft Sway. These web pages are going to continually grow and be used as a way to showcase the students developing knowledge on Social Justice as we link Digital Technologies with PBL (or Humanities).

These students have worked hard on selecting a layout and design for their webpage, researching appropriate text to add in, including appropriate pictures and images to their websites and hyperlinking and embedding appropriate documents and files. We are hoping that the Year 5 students will get to share their web pages with their peers during an online virtual expo later on this term. Thanks to Ethan from 5B for sharing his Sway project with us all, please view the image below.

Year 9 Coding Elective

The students participating in the Year 9 Coding Elective have been learning all about Python. Python is a popular coding language and the reason we learn this language at Brookside is due to the popularity of it and also it helps for our students who are transitioning to Lakeview, as this is the language that they use there. These students have been completing an online course using GROK Learning called Introduction to Programming (Python). This course allows the students to learn the fundamental Python skills through an interactive and age appropriate platform that is curriculum aligned. This platform also allows the teacher to log in and view their progress and then help the student troubleshoot if needed.
