Notice for HSC Students

Exam time can be stressful and exam preparation is not always a process that comes easily to students. How can you help?  Check that they have a study plan and that they plan to study!

Besides providing a quiet space for study, have snacks available and encourage students to take regular breaks. You can also check that they have a balance of schoolwork, sport and social interaction in the lead up to the Trial HSC exam. Regular ‘down time’ is essential.

You could also ask them specific questions about their study.

Study, or at least the short version, is:

  1. Students make study notes.
  2. They learn the content by testing themselves regularly.
  3. They do lots of practice exam questions.

You could ask:

Do they have a complete set of study notes for each subject?

Study notes are summaries of class notes from teachers’ examples and explanations and notes from textbooks.  Gaps can be filled by friends or from summaries at the end of textbook chapters.

How are they testing to see if they can remember the content?

Just reading over notes is not an effective way to learn information.  Try the ‘look, say, cover, write, check’ technique to learn chunks of information or any other way that works for them.

Then use some of the many digital ways to complete questions from past exam papers.  Try them under exam conditions.  (sitting at a desk, in silence, for a specified time)

Click here for more ideas, links and resources to encourage students to ‘stay the course’.

The HSC Study Space in the library, 3 afternoons each week, will continue until the end of Week 4. All students are welcome any or all days.  We offer advice and/or assistance with study or just a quiet space to work with minimal disruptions.  See the image above for details.  We wish all parents and students well in the lead up to the Trial HSC exams.
