Olympic Fever in Year 2

Olympic Fever is sweeping Year 2. The students were lucky enough to watch Ariarne Titmus take out the gold medal for the 200m live last Wednesday morning after recess. There was lots of chanting, “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi Oi” and cheering, screaming and applause when she was the first to touch the edge of the pool. The students sang along to the National Anthem as Ariarne stood proudly on the podium to receive her gold medal.

Olympic Letters

Last week during Remote Learning, the students wrote letters to their teachers pretending they had been chosen to compete in the Olympics. They had to say what sport they were competing in, how long they had spent training, their favourite part of the Olympics and whether their family had attended to watch them compete. The student’s letters were very entertaining.

Sentence Stretching

The students also completed a Sentence Stretching activity about the Olympics using the 5Ws, Who? What? When? Where? Why? Sentence Stretching encourages students to add greater detail to their writing by providing more information. The students enjoyed completing this activity and came up with some excellent stretched sentences.

Olympic Posters

Once the students returned to school, they had the opportunity to design their own Olympic posters encouraging people to watch or attend the Olympics. They included a bold heading, reasons why you should attend the Olympics, illustrations and a fancy border. The students thoroughly enjoyed designing their posters. We hope you enjoy reading a selection of these below.

Measuring Olympics

During one of our Maths sessions last week, the students were involved in two very serious Olympic events. Discus (plate throwing) and Javelin (straw throwing). The students had to estimate the distance of their throw first. Each student had three throws in each event. They measured the distance of each throw and then ordered them from shortest to longest. The students had lots of fun and there was lots of laughter as the students stepped up to the start line for their throws. Enjoy viewing the photos of our Olympic events.
