DEBATING
Our Lilydale High School debating teams have enjoyed fantastic success over the years competing in numerous inter school competitions and frequently emerging winners. Indeed, we are fortunate to have extremely articulate debaters who have been ably supported and coached by our dedicated staff. Ms Higgins and Ms Redgewell are again thrilled to be working with our senior teams, whilst Ms Xynos and Ms Hunter will be supporting our younger participants. Being part of the debating team is not only beneficial for the improvement of students’ public speaking skills, but also facilitates their ability to mount clear, logical arguments that are so advantageous to essay writing. Interested students should keep an eye on Compass for meeting times.
EDUCATION WEEK
Writing Competition
The annual Lilydale High School Education Week writing competition is imminent and students from Years 7-10 are asked to submit a short story (500 words) or poem (16 lines) on a topic of their choice. Winners, selected from each year level as well as our ALP classes, are rewarded with a Literary Luncheon where their special guests and teachers are regaled with their writing talents. So get writing! Students are asked to submit their entries to their teacher by Wednesday 18 March.
WRITERS' NOTEBOOKS & FOLIOS
Writers’ Notebooks and Folios are once again a core component of our Years 7-9 curriculum and are proving a great success in developing our students’ writing skills. Supported by our ‘Thinking Thursday and Friday Frenzy’ initiative, students are encouraged to write on subjects of their choice, in an effort to encourage them to write with greater assuredness, coherence and imagination. Anecdotal evidence from English teachers indicates that there has been some tangible improvement in our students’ writing and we thank all form teachers for their assistance in encouraging our students to think and write in this supportive environment. So get thinking and writing!
