ACC Debating – Junior Division Championships, 2016

Congratulations to the St Bede’s CollegeJunior Debating squad members who recently competed in the 2016 ACC Junior Debating Championship, Divisions 1 AND 2.

The annual event is a round robin format contested between all ACC Colleges, with the final round being power-paired to end the competition with a great challenge.

It delights me to announce that St Bede’s College are the Division One ACC Junior Debating Champions for 2016, with the Division 2 team coming in third after a solid effort from an inexperienced, but talented team.

Topics for the day included: “That Australia needs a new National Anthem”, “That we should close all zoos” and “That gambling advertising should be banned”.

It is excellent to see that the ACC competition is offering challenging prompts that require competitors to become well-informed and confidently engaged with topical social issues.

Preparations for this event saw the students closely scrutinising perspectives on racial inequality and social stereotyping in Australia, animal welfare issues and the mindsets for and against the advertising of gambling in contemporary society.

Well done to both teams who credibly represented St Bede’s College on the day; your College is so very proud of your efforts and achievements:

ACC Div 1 Champions: Congratulations to -

Elijah Barrett, Flynn Morley, Liam Collins, Tom Griffin and Lachlan Doyle.

Best Speaker Awards on the day went to: Elijah Barrett and Liam Collins.

Acc Div 2, third place: A very credible result on your first competitive occasion after completing mid-year training –

Tom Burn, Damon Kelly, Jacob Legge, William Devlin and Jasper Hattam.

Best Speaker Awards given on the day went to: William Devlin and Damon Kelly.

This competition officially ends the debating season for 2016, with St Bede’s College winning ACC Division 1 Championships in both Junior and Intermediate sections for 2016.
