Dear Parents and Students,

The term continues its frantic pace, typical of the ‘third terms’ of the past few years. Subject selection and course counselling for current students, and the selection processes for new students, certainly keep things lively, alongside the normal work in classrooms.

Course Information Nights and Course Selection for next year

Information Nights regarding course selection for next year in Year 11 and 12, so therefore for current year 10 and 11 students and parents, have taken place in recent weeks in the South One Lecture Theatre here at Monash University.

The excellent levels of attendance of recent years occurred again, and this has made the process of settling courses of study for Year 11 and 12 in 2019 so much easier. I would like to thank Mr. Anderson and the VCE team for their excellent organisation of these events and the follow-up processes back at school.

All staff involved in the Course Counselling process have enjoyed meeting our students and their parents, listening to their aspirations for the future and settling on a pathway for every student to maximise the chances of each goal being reached.

Current Year 12 students will hear all about the processes for selecting university courses for next year, the process for SEAS as well as the many scholarships which are on offer, at next week’s VTAC information session for students and parents at 7pm on Tuesday 14 August, again in the South One Lecture Theatre here at Monash University.

New Students to JMSS in 2018

We have begun the follow-up selection processes for students applying for places here in Year 10 next year. I would like to thank in advance the many former students, current teachers and Monash academics who are about to assist with this important work. Offers will be made to students two to three weeks after these processes are completed. Offers for places for Year 11 next year will be made soon.

It is important for students, parents and visitors to the school to realise that the Year 10 selection processes will dominate the next week and a half at JMSS, so there will be parts of the school such as the void under Flannery House which will be inaccessible during these times.

Year 11 Student William Dunstan excels again

Congratulations once again to JMSS Year 11 student and champion fencer William Dunstan whose performance in last weekend’s State Championships ensured John Monash Science School has won the Victorian Schools fencing Trophy for the third year in a row!

Despite specialising in foil, William fenced a superb epee in the semi-final, downing the second-ranked fencer effortlessly 10 to 3. He showed great patience and cool in the final to out fence an epee specialist who was neck and neck with him in the season points race. The final between them was the absolute decider. William finished the season with 2 x gold, 1 x silver and 1x 9th place out of 4 rounds. The hiccup in round 3, 9th, did make things uncomfortable but he met the challenge brilliantly.

Congratulations Will on this outstanding performance. We are all really proud of you, and the trophy will stand tall and proud at JMSS for yet another year!
